The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.

My beloved Toby

I lost my 6 year old yorkie from a horrible accident less then a year ago.
I miss him everyday!!
I still have nightmares about the incident that took him away from us.

My husband and I and Toby's brother Tyler we're walking in central park on a sunday morning and we met up with some friend who also had small dogs. I remember looking over to my right and noticing a very large white dog walking with his owner.I didn't know what type of dog it was because I had never seen one before.(It was an Akita)
Well he left his owner and came over and sniffed the dogs and then left. all of a sudden he came charging back in and went after a little girl yorkie. she yelped and got out of his way and he just turned and grabbed Toby and would not let go. IT WAS AWFUL!! My husband tried for it seemed like 20 min to get the dog to release Toby. He finally did and he just took Toby and ran for the nearest Vet Hospital. But it was to late.

Poor Tyler suffered for months of depression,he misses his brother so much.

I always new that I would outlive my Toby but I never thought he would be taken from us soon. I still to this day do not understand why the owner of the Akita did not have his dog on a leash!

It is unforgivable that the dog's owner did not leash his dog, not to mention ILLEGAL. I am so sorry you had to go through this. I hate to hear these stories because the aggressive dog is only behaving that way because of his owner's irresponsibility. I remember when Akitas became "fashionable" and like pit bulls and other dogs bred for fighting, many owners abandoned them because they found them to be unmanageable. If it comes down to the dog biting a person, the dog will be taken by animal control and put down -- another senseless loss. It's a terrible tragedy that your poor little dog had to suffer the consequences of another negligent idiot's decision making. I would have nightmares too. That's a traumatic experience and I feel for your loss. I am so sorry. I can say that grief counseling can help, depending on what stage you're in. I hope you have support of loved ones who understand and take it seriously. I wish you the best.

Thank you so much Spiky, I am in counseling and little by little I am getting better. It has helped me to write out my feelings as well as reading books on pet loss.

HELLO JOY, SO SAD ABOUT YOUR LOSS' TOBY'' ,I UNDERSTAND YOUR PAIN, YES WHAT THE OWENER DID IS EVIL AND WICKED, AKITA ARE DANGEROUS DOGS, AND THE LITTLE ONES SUFFER..I STOPPED TAKING MY OWN DOGS OUT YEARS AGO, AND WOULS ONLY TAKE THEM ON A SUNDAY TO A PLACE THAT WAS SAFE, BECAUSE HERE SMALL DOGS WERE BEING KILLED AND I WAS SO UPSET, ONE DAY A NEIGHBOUR DOG WAS ATTACKED, AND MYSELF AND MY H ,TOOK HER TO THE VET HOSPITAL, THE DOG RECOVERED , BUT I TOO WAS LEFT IN TOTAL SADNESS AND STRESS , FEARING FOR MINE, EVEN NOW MY YORKIE CHARLIE, IS A STAY HOME, IN SUMMER WE GO AGAIN FOR OUTING AND THERE ITS SAFE, WE WENT FOR A HOLIDAY RECENTLY, AND THERE SHE WAS HAPPILY WALKING OFTEN..YES IT IS A BIG PROBLEM ,SO MANY BIG DOGS AROUND, THERE SHOULD BE KEPT ON A LEASH, BUT OWENERS DON'T CARE, SICK PEOPLE THEY ARE,, I WISH I COULD GIVE YOU A HUG, I KNOW HOW LOVEBLE YORKIES ARE, REMEMBER HOW TOBY BROUGHT JOY INTO YOUR LIFE AND THE GOOD MEMORIES, LOVING HUGS LUCY

So sorry to hear about your loss...the owner of the Akita shouldn't even have a dog if they don't know how to keep it on a leash but the Akita should have been disiplined as well.
I send my prayers your way that you heal from this.
