Pet Bereavement Support Group
The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.

Some even keep a stuffed animal nearby for holding
You never know that some day you might come across a fuzzy/furry face whose look is just telling you that you need each other-but there isno rush and you will know when it is time
My husband and I waited about 6 months before getting a new dog (then we ended up getting two). I'm glad we waited. During that time -- three months of it -- I worked on creating a photo story book about our first dog. Doing that was really therapeutic for me. If there is something you enjoy doing, like graphic design, or painting, or gardening, or whatever, I'd suggest finding a way to incorporate your pet into that activity and see if that brings you some peace.
Having our new babies has helped. I was still crying over Rupert every day, and having Nugget and Dudley has helped so much with that. And I know exactly what I'm in for this time around, but I don't care. I really believe that Rupert brought these two babies to us -- that he chose them for us to help us heal. They were both shelter dogs, and Nugget was not at all the kind of pup I was looking for. I wanted another male (all my dogs have always been male), and a schnauzer. But I couldn't get Nugget out of my head, and finally went back and got her. I know why now -- she's so perfect for me. And poor baby was mistreated, if not outright abused. She was a runaway. Call me crazy, but I think Rupert got her to run away, and brought us together because he knew I would love her the way she should be loved. He was looking out for both of us. Rupert did have a soft heart when it came to hurt animals (he brought me to an injured baby squirrel, twice).
Anyway, I know it's hard to think about adopting another dog right now. If the time comes for you to do it, you'll know. For now, just let yourself grieve however you need to, and don't let anyone tell you how long it "should" take. It will take however long you need it too.
