The loss of a pet or animal to which one has become emotionally bonded can be an intense loss, comparable with the death of a loved one. Whilst there is strong evidence that animals can feel such loss for other animals, this community focuses on human feelings, when an animal is lost, dies or otherwise is departed.

I came across this poem and I just had to share it. I hope it can bring all of you a little comfort, along with (healing) tears.

I Havent Left At All

I saw you gently weeping as you looked through photographs
You paused for just a moment at one that made you laugh.
But as you turned more pages the tears began to flow
You whispered that you missed me but I want you to know;
I softly licked those stinging tears that down your cheeks did fall
I want to help you understand I havent left at all.

On those days that you are overcome with sorrow, pain and grief
I rest my head upon your leg to offer some relief.
When you take our walking path Ive seen you turn around
Because I know you surely heard my paws upon the ground.

At night while you are sleeping I snuggle at your side
You stroke my fur as you touch that place where I used to lie.
You said its just your heart playing tricks upon your mind
But rest assured Im really there, my spirits left behind.

I know your heart is hurting; its like an open sore
You think my life has ended and you wont see me anymore.
But for those of us bound tight by love, death is not the curtain call;
Its really the eternal beginning that waits for us all
So, dear Master as you live your life I patiently await
For us to be together when you pass through Heavens gate...

That is so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing.
I couldn't sleep last night and found myself looking at pics and videos of Lady while softly crying. It felt like she was 'just around the corner' most of yesterday and this morning.

Thanks for sharing, it made me cry and smile at the same time. Soon it will be going on 4 months since I lost Abby and it is still a difficult journey. I miss her so much.

Nancy, I truly believe that every time we feel their presence, they really are around.
Julie, I know how hard those looming anniversaries are, just as we feel we've found a bit of balance, they throw us off gear again. I guess four months is still early days, I had the three months' mark last week and I still don't feel nowhere near acceptance.

that is a beautiful poem,thanks 4 sharing,it brought tears to my eyes,its been 14 weeks to the day since my clay is gone and its been 14 weeks of hell,i pray he is waiting for my when i die because to hold him in my arms again will be my heaven xx

Thank you so much for sharing this poem, it brought tears to my eyes also. So many times I think I hear my sweet boy walking across my hardwood floor. It has been 6 weeks since I lost him and it seems like only yesterday. I hold on to the hope that one day I will see him again.

Today is day 16 since our pug Niki died. I have had Fibro for 23 years. I know pain. But THIS pain is just horrible. I have no ambition. My home needs my attention. But I can not do it. Niki was with me all day long. He was always ready for a nap, a drink or snack. We watched movies together. For the past 14 & a half years I never had one day of loneliness. Now I have this horrid ache all over my heart and it won't go away. His toys are waiting for him in the toy basket. I did put his dish away. I do not know how to go on. I need to start living and I just do not know how. How do you pick yourself up and just go? I do not know how. Thank you for the poem. It is beautiful.

I'm so very sorry for your loss and for the pain you're going through, you're right, it is like no other. I wish I had some magic cure for this awful pain we're all feeling, but there isn't any. In all honesty, I don't think it ever goes away, but it does become a little more bearable with time, we somehow learn to live with it. So, trust me, even if right now it feels impossible to go on and to make it through this, you will, you just have to take it one day at a time and give your soul time to heal. It's a long and bumpy road, some days it may feel like one step forward and two backward, but know you're not alone, we're all walking it and you can call out to us or lean on us when you feel weary and sore.

Yrod - I'm so so sorry to hear about Niki. As Xiao Shu said, we are all here going through this journey together. If it wasn't for the friends I met here who understand what I'm going through, the pain would be even more unbearable. For me, it's been 10 weeks and I still can't move my baby's things (beds, toys, pillows). I packed away her bowls and leashes (for what, I'm not sure). It does get a little easier with time,with a mix of good days and bad.

Just read this today and it is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing. I know that Cookie will never leave me...how could she...she was my heart. I so look forward to that day when we are reunited but until then, I will attempt to carry on. Meeting new friends along the way and hopefully helping them while healing.

I just wanted more time with my baby. Im so sad I keep reliving finding him and not knowing what to do. I feel like I should have tried harder to give him CPR even though he was gone maybe I could have brought him back. I panicked, I cant get the image of finding him out of my head or the guilt I feel that his last minutes of life were filled with suffering and panic and though I was so close by I didnt hear him or help him. I dont know if I can ever forgive myself, I miss my baby so much. He was more than just a cat he was my best friend.
