I felt the same way when my Cutter was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and, like you, I did not think I could survive his loss, evem though I had other animals. But I made it through the loss, and you can, too, although it may not feel like it at times. For now, try not to dwell on what is going to happen; concentrate instead on making your last weeks or months with her as memorable as you can. You will know when she is ready to go, and don\'t worry about that part until you have to. And continue to stay in touch on this board, so that we can all help you with this difficult time in your life.

I have been where you are. In our case it was kidney failure, but the same difficult times. A fatal illness, dealing with care issues, and finally the most difficult decision of all to put your friend to sleep. It is the most difficult act of love I have ever faced. But when you know the animal is uncomfortable and treatment is no longer working, it is the most humane act.

Trust me I had to consult two vets, re-read everything on the internet about final symptoms, and reassure myself that I was making the right decision. My Zachary was so uncomfortable at the end (seizures/convulsions, no eating, weight loss, incontinent, high toxin levels in blood work, anemia, and restlessness) that I knew he could fight no more. We battled the illness for 6 years and after a long life of 25 years I took him to the vet and kissed his head, repeatedly told him I loved him and sent him on his journey to heaven.

I was not prepared for the aftermath. I knew it would be hard as we were kindred spirits. He slept in my arms every night, we spent our days together holding each other, and in the summer had picnics by our pond. He was my Snugglezach. We just couldn\'t get enough of each other.

Make your final days count. Love her with all your heart. Tell her how you feel as many times as you want. Take some pictures of her so you remember how sweet she was even in the final days. She has such a sweet face...kiss her and love her right up to the end.
