Glenn Close was perhaps the most notorious depiction (and then Beyonce's movie, recently), but BPD women have forever been depicted as crazy monsters in film. I guess we're easy stereotypes for un-creative writers. I was expecting to fall asleep in front of a Lifetime movie last night (perhaps that was my mistake), but then my attention was caught when I realized that this was an "uber-BPD" woman in the movie. Even though I knew that her characterization of her as a homicidal maniac wasn't ME, it still got to be and made me once again feel ashamed of my experiences, attachment issues, and emotional responses. This shouldn't happen. If they must use BPD women in movies, i wish that they could present us as more complicated and varied as we actually are. And what about kind, productive, loving...? I'm just getting tired of this. This stereotyping happens within the clinical community as well (maybe not the homicidal part, but other highly unattractive stereotypes).

To boost my spirits, and maybe others' do any of you know of any movies that depict BPD in more complicated, kinder ways? I mean actual movies, not documentaries.

The Others- based on virginia woolfes life and her novel- ms dalloway....it is rather interesting. VW had BPD and comitted suicide. You shud see. its fun. the characters are creatively mad :)...
most horror films have implicit references to mental illnesses-
exorcist three is kinda interesting - split personality..
Sophie's choice is sad and interesting. One of the characters is schizophrenic and the other is more complicated due to holocaust trauma....
Oh Oh----- White ribbon !!---- though it shows the pre nazi society in very poor light. they are simply fucked up!
Head On- the female character is suicidal, mentally unstable and has a torrid life.... but she is extremely real, loving and strong. very strong.
there are no overt refrences to BPD cept in the others but ... characters in these films are emotionally unstable and rather interesting..

Girl, Interrupted. one movie with Winona Rider and Angelina Jolie. I thought they portrayed a kinder BPD person in that film. I hate being written off as "crazy". That is such a dismissive term when we are all victims of abuse that caused us to be this way. And we all have deeper motivations to our behavior. Shallow people can't see deeper than the shallow behaviors.

I forgot about Girl, Interrupted--how did I forget that one? Yeah, Crossing, i agree...and when the show the "abuse" origins in those shallower movies, they show rather flimsy, flat accounts of that as well. Guess the main purpose of the shallower movies is merely entertainment and escape...I keep forgetting.

I watched Girl, Interrupted after my possible BPD was brought to my attention by my therapist (under 18, can't get diagnosed, y'all probably know my deal by now) and it honestly made me feel a lot better about it. Ryder's character didn't realize she had a problem, like me, and was portrayed as human and a victim of circumstance. I needed that over the murderous movie villain sterotype.
