Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
My big sister, sigh, there aren't enough words or time to explain her. She was a very difficult child. My mother took her to psychiatrists and psychologists and was once even told there was no hope. She was aggressive, she lied, she stole, she was defiant. When the rest of us came along she beat some of us, tortured us, conned us into doing bad things (I am 8 years younger), and did other various negative things. As a teen she did E, Mushrooms, pot and drank.
She is a crack addict, recovering, then relapsing, recovering, then relapsing. She has spent time in federal prison, provincial prisons and rehabs. She will steal ANYTHING. Food, clothes, toys, knick knacks, cash. From anyone. She will take so much food it will rot before she can eat it! And it is premeditated. She recentely got caught stealing on two differerent occasions and will most likely be going back to jail. She often holds threats of suicide over our mothers head to get her to do what she wants.
She is cruel to her children (who she has no custody over anymore) and screams at them horrible things. She will be nice one moment and completley off her rocker the next.
Ive been reading up on antisocial personality disorder....does anyone have any experience in this? I don't know what to think anymore. She was diagnosed as bipolar, in between the E and the crack she briefly took meds. But is bipolar this off the wall?

This sounds like more than APB and Bipolar to me, honestly. It sounds like there are probably multiple issues going on. I'm sorry I can't help more, but I wanted to let you know that I did take the time to read this and I am sorry for what you're going through. It sounds like you care for your sister quite a bit, and she's lucky to have someone putting this much effort into helping her. However, sadly, she may not capable of being helped until she is ready to. You can't force someone to turn their life around, especially if it's always been this way. *hugs* I am truly sorry, I hope someone more knowledgeable can come along and point you in a better direction.

This may make me sound like a monster, and it's not like I don't care about her, but at this point figuring out what goes on in her head is more for my sanity. It feels like my sister is so many different people all wrapped into one, and she hates everybody at least a few hours per day if not more. I feel like beating my head against a wall because I have run out of ways to 'handle' her. I finally gave up the walking on eggshells approach, as she ended up snapping anyways, and it was unhealthy for me. I'm tired of the kid gloves approach and being blunt causes the same reactions being careful did!

Let me ask a question..... Is her behavior like this ALL the time or does she cycle between depressed, normal, and out of control? Bipolar episodes typically last for weeks or months before swithching to one of the other states but yes, it can be that dramatic. If her behavior is constant then it is more likely to be a personality disorder. Unfortunately it really doesn't matter what her diagnosis should be there is nothing you can do to help or change her unless and until she wants to get help.... All you can do is protect yourself from harm.

She does cycle a little, thats the BPD we were told. But it's maybe two hours of normal per three weeks of outrageousness. It's not like days of good, days of bad. And she can be in the middle of her few good hours and STILL do something like steal, or use drugs. She can be laughing and smiling and still call her 16 year old daughter an ungrateful stunned c*nt who needs her teeth knocked in. It feels like the older she gets the nastier she gets more often.
