Personality Disorders Support Group
Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
Yes, there is help for us. Some of us have received treatment and fully recovered. I think it comes from learning a whole new way of thinking towards problems and conflicts.
I have just been reading self help books. I don't even have insurance so I definately can't afford treatment. I'm just fortunate enough that my old docs have grown tired of giving me samples. My meds. alone were over $400 with insurance. I have no idea what they would be now.
I hope someone will respond to you question with the knowledge of what you are asking about. What ever you have faith in-hold tight to that faith. For me it is the Holy Trinity. When people and the world around me are crumbling-I still have total and complete faith that God will be with me. He always has been-even through the bad times.
Good luck dear,
Tamara
Like Tobi2 said, DBT is normally the best therapy for our illnes. And yes it can be seen as an illness at its worse but I like to think of it as a result of my life experiences. I grew up in a invalidating environment (classic BPD symptom)therfore did not learn appropiate life skills to live a stable life.
DBT helped me because it taught me life skills, how to react to different situations, how to have a relationship, how to cope with my emotions. Until DBT I never knew how to do these things!
It has a very successful reputation, if the person isready for the herapy. It is hard and intensive but worth it. I haven't heard of CBT used to treat BPD before. I think CBT is ore about your behaviour and changing your thinking.
DBT does that, but is a really understanding therapy. You need to be in group therapy, and the leaders fully trained in DBT and they should know BPD inside out! Unlike your current Doc! I think you need someone who will understand your diagnosis and hopefully DBT would give u that.
Can u ask for it? I have heard it hard to get it though so u may need to search or jus get a new therapist.
Am hoping u will get help soon
One thing that my DBT counsellor had said, that really stuck with me is this... She said we always say " I AM bipolar", but that's not true... she said we would say, "hello, I'm diabetes... or hello, I'm epilepsy"... but we say we ARE bipolar. We have bipolar, just like some people have diabetes... but that isn't what we are. And just like someone with another illness, that learns how to manage and deal with it, we need to learn how to manage our illness. The illness is something we have, but it isn't who we are.
I hope this helps... and I would say if your psychologist or psychiatrist says they just can't help you... then keep looking for someone else, there has to be help, sometimes we just need to demand it. Best of luck!!!
Which part of UK are u from? Im from north somerset.
It sounds nasty I know, but I have heard this is meant to be true. As it can be very hard to change our personalities when we have been like this for years. I'ts like trying to retrain or rewire our brains to learn new skills and its difficult. But in my opinion its not impossible. There are some therapists who also do believe there is hope for us, we just need to find them! Im lucky i have got my american therapist and she is very knowledgable on dbt.
