Personality Disorders Support Group
Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
No I don't feel responsible for mental illness, it is something I did not choose.
I'm BP and BDP .
Been pretty much BP all my life and blamed everything on BP , Now I find out I have BDP too and a few other personality disorders.. UGH.
Just starting to learn about BDP .And trying to accept it.
. I couldn't change that I was adopted and I couldn't change some of the fears I had because I simply didn't know how. I didn't have the capacity at that time in my life. I didn't know how to stand up to the sexual abuse a supposed friend of mine started with me when I was a young teen. It didn't happen all the time but it happened and it wounded me. Nobody recognized I needed therapy and help back starting very early in my life.
My mood disorder started later. And I got blown off about it..a neuropsychologist dx me with cyclothymia back at 22 and sent me to a pyschiatrist who blew that off completely and said I had ADHD. He treated me for 1 year to get me thru college and let me go. I thought that was it. No it wasn't thru my 20's the mood swings got worse. It even got worse after my child was born and that is when they gave me the bipolar/NOS personality diagnosis.
So anyways you probably do have a mixture. Your mood disorder may not fully manifest until later. You can't always depend on people's dx being cemented and non movable. Diagnosis can change.
Hang in there Mush I know your suffering right now. Just keep a watch on things. Get the help you can now.
It took a lot of reading to understand these disorders..It doesn't help BPD has a huge stigma...But i have done a lot of research ti understand it now.And its really an affection of the limbic system.
In most cases is caused also by child abuse and neglect (in my case too) or growing up in very invalidating environments. It is biological in nature the studies now show.
Google L-HPA axis BPD, BPD neuroendocrine system, limbic system and BPD..............Some of those will bring up great articles that explain it.
If you suffered a lot of abuse and neglect as a child is good to get several opinions and make sure you're not being misdiagnosed. And that you really have PTSD.But many doc now think that BPD is really a form of PTSD called Complex Postraumatic Stress Disorder.
In any case they can also overlap. But the point is that they are real biological changes in a person's biochemistry due to child abuse and neglect in the developing years.
We cant choose our genetics or the enviroments we are raised in.so no its not your fault.
