Depakote (divalproex sodium) affects chemicals in the body that may be involved in causing seizures.

Depakote is used to treat various types of seizure disorders. It is sometimes used together with other seizure medications.

Depakote may also be used to treat other problems

When I was put into the mental hospital 2 years ago My docor put me on Depakote for my depression and my personality disorders. While I was on the medicine I began to have sizures I had never had sizures before. My docor finaly took me off of it. But I am still having sizures it really did not help my depression or my Personality disorder..

your welcome Yes I now suffer from seizures because of this medicine. I was not having seizures before i took this medicine.

This scares me because I am on 2500mg of Depakote for over a year now. It has helped my mood, but I have gained over thirty pounds of weight. I haven't had a seizure yet but I guess that could change.

I'm also on 20mg of Abiliby. This medicine has recently made me nervous too due to my diabetes.

(I'm on other meds. too)

I'm sorry you are suffering. What does a seizure feel like? How would I recognize if I was having one?

How long were you on Depakote before you started having seizures?

I was it for 7 months shortly after I started taking it I started having seizures and other health problems. I could not sleep at night I was very jumpy and my moods were really bad.

I can't sleep at night. I don't see any of the other things yet but I am going to have some questions for my psychiatrist on my next visit.
I do have a little tremor to my hands but with the large number of meds. I'm on I don't know what would be causing it.

Yes talk to your docor about it. and get thier advice it can cause liver damage so they need to run blood test often to make sure your liver and kidneys are okay.

Thanks for the kidney/liver tests suggestions. We have never ran any test yet and it has been around a year.

They are suppose to run test when your on that medicine because it can do seroius damage. how long have you been taking it.

Never wanted to take it myself because of the weigh gain issue. I have a son who has Asperger Syndrome and they put him on it when he was eight or nine and it made him psychotic, same with Risperdal.
His psychiatrist seemed dumbfounded that it would do that and tried to suggest other anti psychotics but I refused. Since then I have heard that medications often have the opposite result on patients especially children who don't need a particular medication, so I do wonder why it confused him that way. So depakote and similar medications do scare me too.

I've been taking them a little over a year. Plus I'm on a lot of other medications.

What works for some, may not for others...I personally am terrified of taking meds...I am on a anti-depressant and gained weight but am doing ok otherwise until I forget to take it lol...but to add more I am scared. I've been at the lowest of lows, like many here, so if a drug possibly could send me back there I say HELL NO.
