Personality Disorders Support Group
Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
Amazing that God actually made us with the ability to be reprogrammed! I did a 6 month DBT "class" as i call it with both group therapy and individual therapy simultaneously. i chose to view it as inpatient even though it was not-- it took so much brain energy, i had to limit my interactions with energy-sucking people, situations, places. once i figured out what items to cut out, it was awesome freedom to just learn and practice the skills.
Regardless of diagnoses, the skills can help. the book "Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder" by Marsha Linehan contains many of the handouts we used. with 30+ years of research, this lady cracked the code on how to retrain the brain to travel more healthy pathways.
it is indeed a bizarre process--to get used to life w/o anxiety. it has been THE IDENTITY CRISIS OF A LIFETIME for me as my fears used to define who i was. we need to REPLACE the anxiety with new focus on things like: "What will I ENJOY DOING?? for a 10 minute 'vacation' away from it all? for a two-hour open slot in my day? hmm...paint my toenails...have coffee with a friend on the comfy couch...who knew? at first, it all felt so BORING!!! life w/o fear does not seem as exciting at first, but PEACE is a whole new world view that we need to integrate little by little into each area of our lives.
after 9 years as a mom, i am just starting to ENJOY reading my children bedtime stories; for the first time in 15 years of marriage, i allow myself to sit in a recliner and watch baseball games with my husband. it's all about MINDFULNESS, and that is the overriding theme with the DBT skills. if you'd like to hear more, send me a message!
