Personality disorders form a class of mental disorders that are characterized by long-lasting rigid patterns of thought and behaviour. Personality disorders are seen by the American Psychiatric Association as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it.
i know that one of the symptoms of borderline is having some episodes that are moment to moment....if i remember right, they rarely last a few days......in july i was doing really good, for a few days, feel back and since mid august i've been feeling SUPER good....like smiling all the time and excited and really positive.....looking back on it, i realize that it was kind of manic....i came down from that "high" a few days ago....still happy and positive, but not so much so that it feels weird or whatever....i feel normal....i guess i'm just wondering if this is normal......sometimes i feel like i'm bi-polar....but i've been to enough therapists and psychiatrists and if i was bi-polar i'm pretty sure that they would have found out by now....i guess i think that i'm bi-polar because the manic stage lasted kind of long....is this normal???
It sounds normal for BPD to me. BPD and Bipolar Disorder share a lot of common traits, and the manic episode can fall under 'mood swing' in the DSM-IV.
There is so much overlap. Even my pdoc hasn't come down hard and fast with me, leaving my diagnosis open to both BPD and bipolar...he's not forced to "label", since he doesn't take insurance! Ouch!
