Hi everyone, I wanted to start a new group for those who have pernicious anemia because the discussions get lost among all the othe anemia posts.

I have just started my b12 shots and not after 2 weeks I saw my b12 go down the toilet like I have for many years using complex B supplements. Has anyone else experienced this? Also I saw in other posts that some have the shots weekly, I have one a month and my levels were completely in the toilet when 2nd testing was done--the complete profile vs the basic. The basic showed borderline so the GP requested the complete and boy was she shocked. Anyone know why some have the shots weekly and some monthly?

I've been injecting B12 for a year and I've found there are different types of phials of B12.
The ones that come as a single glass phial have the vitamin in a preservative, which is acid, and this is what hurts and causes all the painful after effects.
I found one brand that comes as 2 phials, one with the B12 as powder and the other is just sterile watyer, which has to be mixed in the syringe right before injecting. These cost double the price of the other type but they do not hurt AT ALL, you literally cannot feel the stuff.

I finally found out that I have the IF factor, so my b12 deficiency is not a result of that, the unfortunate thing is, I was taking 3000 units of b12 via patch, and I stopped taking it 5 days before my blood test, and low and behold my blood test came back normal for everything. It's never been like that with injections, so now the hematologist wants me to go 3 months without using any patches for my b12 to plummet again, so we can try to figure out why I'm not maintaining it. In the meantime I have to see a neurologist and be tested for a particular parasite, that zaps b12 up to 80% of what's absorbed. Since I eat alot of fresh fish, I could possibly have this parasite, so we have to check to see if that is another thing we can check off the list.

Not sure if this helps or if you are interested but for those struggling with B12 deficiency, I recently heard about a new oral prescription alternative to the injections called Eligen B12. I recently read that it works even if you don't have intrinsic factor (so even if you don't have normal gut absorption). Apparently it came out a month or two ago...
