Pemphigus is an autoimmune disorder that causes blistering and raw sores on skin and mucous membranes. As with other autoimmune disorders, it is caused when the body's defenses mistake its own tissues as foreign, and attack the cells. There are three types of pemphigus which vary in severity: pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus foliaceus, and paraneoplastic pemphigus.

Just a note of encouragement: pemphigus does NOT have to be a lifelong illness, despite some of the things you may have read or heard. There are different ways to treat it, almost all of which include prednisone, but there are also long-term remissions that defy the notion that it is a permanent affliction. In my own case, my "remission" has lasted 11 years, long enough for me to consider myself cured. I have posted my story, along with a handful of others, at: www.pemphinremission.com

hello,
there has been a long silence.
I have been with cortisone and immunodedpressor for 16 years,and am afraid eliminate them.At the moment 10 mgs prednisone.and 2grms cell-cept.
have lot of weekness.blurred vision,dizziness,body pain and back pain,mussle atrophy.
This was just keep you up-date.

It has been a long time since I have written. I was in remission but it appears that I may be coming out. I am just a little scared. I don't want to go through what I did before. I will be retiring in March. I hope that will help with the stress in my life.

Hi all. I just wanted to let you know that Remission does happen and WITHOUT taking steroids! Please look up Dr. Grant Anhalt at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. He is treating Pemphigus with Rituxan therapy. I had my first flare up and was diagnosed in February of this year and went through a horrible round of prednisone with a local doctor. I was told about Dr. Anhalt through a friend and am so happy I found him. He took me off the prednisone and scheduled me for a Rituxan drip. I've done 2 over the last 6 months and have had only minor blistering in between. He said that it typically takes between 2-6 treatments and patients go into remission. Good luck to you all!!

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
