Four and a half years after diagnosis I find that I am having more and more trouble writing and typing. I must slowly and laboriously draw my letters if anyone is to read them, (including myself.) Typing is an exercise in deleting multiple extra letters in each word when I am at my worst.
I recently picked up a Samsung Galaxy 5 smart phone and my daughter put me on to "swyping." I am getting good at it and it has really helped my productivity. It could be that because it is a new skill, that I am performing in my cognitive brain instead of my Basal Ganglia, or even better that new connections are being created that I am now able to utilize.

With Swyping you drop a finger on the first letter of the word and quickly swish to the letters of the word in order. The word "this" starts with the letter "T" then quickly swyping right and down a row, brief pause, up and right a row, brief pause, then swype left six keys to the "S." Once planted on the keyboard my fingers don't shake or tap until I pick up after the last letter. Because I am a touch typist I did have a little problem visualizing the layout of the keyboard. My brain map is more finger oriented. With practice the keyboard map is becoming imprinted and I can "see it" in my "mind's eye." Eventually it becomes easy to do even long difficult words like "honorarium" or 'horrific." By the way, you do the double "rr" by circling around the "R" key.

"Swype" is an Android specific product. iOS has a similar "Swiftkey" that reviewers say is working well for i-phones etc. Another reviewer says Swiftkey is not there for windows 8 OS.

The bottom line may simply keep looking at new things as they come out. With bits of proteins plugging up our synapses one way to keep ahead of this disease may be simply to be continually learning something new. Pick up a new musical instrument, learn a new language or even a new way to write.
