My mother abused me by walking in while I was changing when no one else was home ... then one day I woke up with her touching me and I yelled at her; my siblings remember that event. My father was a tyrant and mother was the buffer, so I had worse to complain about. I didn't realize the harm caused by both parents until I was finally married and required therapy (later learning that both siblings also had therapy).
I do not report my mother today because she cannot hurt anyone else. I continue to accept her because I realize that she tries to act in a manner that makes her believe she is loving ... and generally, she is.
My father is my sister's concern - I believe that she doesn't report him because he, too, is of no threat to anyone today ... and she lives 3 days away (he has never gone to her house in 25 years).

MickKay, my deepest sympathy for your horrible experiences as a child. I am compelled to tell you that you may be mistaken about the current harmlessness of your parents. Do you have children of your own, ow nieces and nephews who visit (or may be visited by) either of your parents? Do they have young neighbors? Do they have contact with children in other ways? It may seem like water under the bridge, but it may still be necessary to report them to authorities.

I'm so glad that you and your sibs are able to talk and console each other about your abuse. Once the scabs have been ripped off these festering, old secret wounds, real healing can begin, and to be able to support each other in that process is such a blessing.
