My 4 yr old son was assaulted by a 6 yr old girl in the bathroom at my 7 yr old daughters softball game. The girl was the niece of a good friend so they had been around each other before at bday parties & such. He told me a few days later when giving him a bath. I called the police and cps was involved but since she was only 6 nothing came of it. My son did tell police and cps all the details. They of course assumed she was assaulted as well but never got any details out of her. I told the friend (aunt) and she was upset but understanding toward me. Our daughters are best friends. She didn't talk to those members of her family for a while, but now they are starting to speak again bc the girls dad tried to commit suicide (he had pending felony charges against him for other reasons & didn't want to answer for them). He was hospitalized for a while, but survived and is fine. The girls parents did nothing abt the situation. They were very angry we called the police, which I do not care about whatsoever- I did what I needed to do & what was in the best interest of my son. But the friend randomly brings them up to me and it's very upsetting. I've asked her to stop. Her husband called them on speakerphone once while I was on the phone with her. I can't help but think it was spiteful, but she claimed he "didn't think anything of it." I decided to end the friendship bc it is too much for me even tho I don't have anything to do w those people and my son will never be around them again. But there is a tie there if I maintain the friendship so I just can't. I feel like a horrible person bc all I could think about the guys attempt was "too bad he wasn't successful." I know from the friend that they do not have much to do w their children and they would be better off in the care of the friend.  My daughter gets upset bc she wants to hang out w her friend and I've tried explaining to her why she can't go around any of them in an age appropriate manner bc she was there when my son told me what happened. It's difficult to navigate. I have so much guilt that it happened. There are so few that know the situation that are understanding. I hear "at least he's rly young" or "he doesn't seem like it's affecting him" or the worst one, "at least he's a BOY and it was a girl that did it." Do people think that helps?! It's so dismissive of my feelings. One person I confided in expecting a bit of support actually laughed. I don't understand how anyone could possibly think it's funny. I could understand a little better if it was nervous laughter but it clearly wasn't. The person actually thought it was funny. I am so hurt for my son. I am supposed to be his protector that keeps him safe that he can trust. And I let him down. And he's too young to even know it.
