Parents Whose children have been sexually abused Community Group
This group is for parents whose children have been sexually abused. We welcome both Mothers and Fathers. Here, we can offer support to one another. We can vent, cry and lift each other up. No condemning or criticizing allowed. We are here for support. We LOVE (((HUGS))) !
So, now I need to find a therapist. It has been a week and a day since my daughter told me. I found the greatest therapy practice (or at least I thought they sounded wonderful) I will probably never know now. I guess we will be qualifying for 'victim reparations" and they will pay for therapy, and the lady I talked to on the phone at this practice immediately called and found out the paperwork, protocol, etc. for victims reparations so that she could get the ball rolling for me and then I found out that if there is any insurance available I have to use it.
My kids are on the "CHIP" program which is insurance for kids through the state I believe. Anyway, they DO cover mental health and gave me a list of therapists but she and her practice are not a provider. I felt really good about her and the other therapists there, too. They actually work with my church to help members, so I felt really comfortable that they would have a good value system and would do therapy with maybe a hint of God thrown in.
I am so sad, but we absolutely cannot afford a single penny for therapy. The church can't really help us with, so I have to choose from the providers and I can't find any info on any of them and I am so paranoid about getting involved with a nutty therapist. I just hear so many horror stories about wacky therapists with ideas that are way out there. In fact a friend told me about a therapist in this area that decided a little boy was sexually aggressive because he crashed the truck into the dinosaur during play therapy and so they took him out of the home. Now, I am taking this story with a very large grain of salt, but it really scares me that we are now "in the system" what if I yell at my kids and they find out and come take them away!?! Ok, I am being crazy, but you always hear of these wild stories of "abuse" by the state agencies. A lot of you have had some bad experiences with the "people in charge" of your cases, etc.
Do I get to observe the play therapy or be in the room? How will I know what kind of things the therapist is asking/saying? Also can someone PLEASE explain all the titles : LCSW, PHY, etc. what do I want to look for?

If this is not court ordered you can pretty much tell them what you want. You can even have therapy for both of you at the same time. Then if you feel comfortable you might want to let your child have individual therapy.

In our case we were allowed to observe the therapy from a different area of the room as long as we did not interfere or answer for our child (barely 8 at the time). This was left up to us and our child. Best of luck and blessings to you.

thanks for the replies, I hope I am given the option of observing, it is not court ordered as far as I know, no one has made us do anything. After reading so many of your stories I feel "lucky" (not really, but you know what I mean) that my daughter told me and we found good people to help us thru the beginning process of this ordeal. CPS has a place here called the Juvenile Justice Center where they do the interview in comfy rooms with just one investigator, usually a woman and the officer observed from out of the room, it was video taped so that hopefully she would never have to go thru retelling the details again. They have been pretty caring and helpful so far. I am just always wary of being "in the system".
