This community is designed as an open forum where the parents and guardians of children with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) can give and receive support, as well as discuss ideas, techniques, concerns, surprises, and challenges they may face with their children.
My 10 yr old son has been on a stimulant medication since April, and developed a tic shortly after (he had the tic before starting meds but it was very mild; the meds seemed to bring it on a little more strong and frequent). It seemed to disappear once school has been out, which led me to believe it was a just nervous tic related to school stress, but last week it seems to have returned. Our doctor did tell us that stimulants can make tics worse, and we would reevaluate the situation in September and perhaps try a non-stimulant (he recommended Strattera).
My question is, if one particular stimulant brings out the tics, does that mean they all will? Are they all pretty much made up the same way? Other than the tics, the meds are working perfectly, and non-stimulants really scare me. It's so stressful to think I have to change his med and start all over again. :(

My daughter is 9 and had been on concerta for 3 years and her tics got so bad that they thought she had tourettes, which scared the hell out of me so we took her off and they are all gone. She was put on tenex which is not a stimulant and seems to work alot better then the concerta.

My son is 10 and has been on Vyvanse for 2 months and his tics have just started getting so bad he has problems walking and controlling his arms and facial movements. I have since taken him off the meds and am going to take him to the dr. I am scared out of my wits and hope they will go away on their own. It is so terrifying. I am not sure if I want him on any other meds, stimulants or not.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
