First of all, I would suggest you ask yourself if you son is in the best educational environment to suit him and his needs. Traditional school settings are not for all kids and parents need to understand this and make changes when needed if possible. As far as the rewards program, I would suggest doing this daily and have an incentive linked to each class, that way it is clearly defined and he can still earn something while losing another thing at the same time. Doing it daily will help him keep his eye on the prize. Our kids tend to have a problem with waiting and being able to see 'down the road'. It's all about the NOW. You can have a chart on the fridge that tracks the rewards through out the week and indicate the amount earned each day and what it was earned for then pay for the week all at once on an agreed upon 'payday'. Very important-once he has earned it, you can't take it away from him. Also, if you ever issue a consequence, such as no tv or computer or video game, etc. only issue that consequence for the duration of that day, try to refrain from long punishments, they don't work and most parents usually end up giving in or tightening up and pile on more consequences, both of these make things way worse and nothing gets learned. This really worked for my son from age 11-13, he really liked watching his progress. When he turned 13, I stopped the program and started with allowance and he kind of even disappointed losing the chart and ability to earn money and points. We have had to change schools for our son once in the 5th grade and again in the 8th grade and we put him in a private school for high school this year which seems to be going okay, better than the past 3 or 4 years, but it may still be too early to tell so I am not getting my hopes up. :-)

I agree about dividing up the reward for each subject. It is something that Ihave run into when half the behavior is good and the rest, not so much. If one class is particularly difficult for him, maybe have a bigger incentive if he does well in that one. You have to fine tune this to make it fit your child but don't keep him waiting too long for the reward. Good luck.

Is your son in a non-traditional school setting? I did transfer my son last year to a school offering an Intensive Support Program.. seems to help a little but not a significant amount. High School next year is concerning me a bit, especially if we can't get a handle on this issue now.

Appreciate your suggestions.. hopefully I can get all of his teachers on board with me and we can make this work on a daily basis. :)

Our son was in a traditional middle school through 7th grade, which was an absolute nightmare. The only other option we had in our district was the middle school alternative program, which we had to try before pushing the school to send him outside the district. This worked pretty good for 8th grade, academically anyway. It is where they send the kids with social issues. My son is academically challenged, which creates social issues, but he is not socially challenged, he is actually pretty popluar so he suffered on a social level for 8th grade. It did allow him to get enough one on one instruction to get his reading level up from 4th grade to an 8th grade level. I was pretty sure if I kept him in this district he would end up in alternative school for high school, which I did NOT want to do since a lot of those kids do have drug, alcohol and legal issues. My son hasn't encountered anything that serious. I was surprised that he asked us if he could go to an all boys catholic high school in our city. He passed the tests and interview and was accepted (surprised the hell out of me) so that is where he is going now, so not very traditional but extremely strict and structured. i think this has helped him a lot. He is failing 3 of 7 classes, but the 3 he is failing isn't by much and his counselor said freshmen usually struggle because of the difficulty of the classes and they are working with him on it. My husband and I are really sacrificing a lot to be able to afford to send him to this school and he knows that if he is failing more than passing at semester, he will have to transfer out...not sure where i will put him then, but he has learned how to study and do homework over the last 2 months and his behavior has been pretty good, only one incident with a day of suspension, but it was a good life lesson.

My question is did you ask him why he is not doing his assignment or not doing well in class? Maybe its the way the material is presented?
and as an FYI its not unusual for children with ADHD to do well in math...it seems to be one of there gifts but sometimes with other subjects holding their attention is difficult becasue they just get board especially during the time between lecuture and assignment.
