This community is designed as an open forum where the parents and guardians of children with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) can give and receive support, as well as discuss ideas, techniques, concerns, surprises, and challenges they may face with their children.
Well so much for the ups we been having because it all came crashing down today. And it shattered. Now i have to pick up the pieces. So where do i start is my question?
Things were going the same at school. Issues still with the teacher but my son was trying to do everything she would ask of him. Would try to not shout out would try to do his work would try to sit still. She even wrote those things on his behavior chart. He was doing good. Last thursday he ended with a blue day. (Green, yellow, blue, red). And friday. And monday. Now today....
i guess he has had enough pressure or something because he snapped. I got a call from his guidence cousoler today saying my son is having a mental break down. Wow. My 7yr old breaking down. And she's right. I heard him in the backround screaming. Just non stop screaming. It broke my heart. I am in shock. He wouldnt even talk to me on phone. Be time i got up to the school they evacuated the classroom. My son was curled under a table in back of room just crying. Non stop crying. It took my best friend and i about half hour to get him to calm down and come with us. Once he did calm he did have a clue of time. He just figured it was time to leave school and i was there to pick him up. Wow. He remembers crying but not to the point of the screaming.
My my thinks this was just building and today tipped the pot. Him and his teacher argued again. And again my kid was actually right in the argument. He has acid reflux told her he felt hos chest stinging and felt throw up in his throat ask for a drink and she agued with him about getting water....he told her he felt the acid and she thought he was lying. She claims she didnt know he had acid reflux. I filled out his paper and i have told her this. So because my son argued with her over getting a drink she put him on blue...set him in a spin and got out of hand.
But we will be seeing a psy and the school psy will be see him after his 2 day suppension and they are talking about an IEP plan.
So i am still in a fog of emotions and scared out of my mind.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
Don't be afraid of an Individualized Education Plan. It can be a very good thing for kids with behavior issues. I taught in a program for kids with behavior problems for years. What an IEP sets in place is a plan for not only dealing with his behavior but also teaching him new ones. And in general, you can't do things like suspend him because of his disability, any more than you could if he had epilepsy and had a seizure at school. Endangering others is the exception, but in general, he can't be punished for being disabled.
We all hate labels, but there are times when a label can help your child. I hope this helps a little. Keep advocating for him. He needs you more than ever now.
Also, I hope you are in contact with his regular doctor. I would be concerned if he can't recall parts of his experience. There are seizure disorders that look like behavior issues, as well as other brain issues. I don't know your son's background at all, so take all of this with that in mind.

Teachers can't just decide to put him on an IEP and then do it. It's a long process, but once he's made a focus of concern, the timeline starts and the school professionals have a certain amount of time, by law, for each step. The first thing they will want to do is rule out any physical reason for his problems. A head injury can most definitely be the cause of these problems and treatment for ADHD may be inappropriate given physical differences in his brain. So, it's really, really important to get that done. Whether it's a disorder like ADHD or a brain injury from head trauma, he can still be qualified.
Once the IEP process is started, the majority of the work is handed over to the school psychologist, who will make sure everything is gathered to make an appropriate decision. And the special education teacher in the building will do testing. Then, they will bring it all together and see if he qualifies for special services. Even if he doesn't, there is always a 504 Plan.
I realized after posting the previous comment that I had read about you and your son. I just forgot your name. Sorry about that. Geesh!
Another thought - you might want to see if there is a foundation for head injuries in your area. I found the parents in those to be very helpful and willing to do anything to help educate and support you.
