Parents of Children with ADHD Support Group
This community is designed as an open forum where the parents and guardians of children with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) can give and receive support, as well as discuss ideas, techniques, concerns, surprises, and challenges they may face with their children.
I have a child that is 9 years old, a boy, and has ADHD. He was just about to turn 6 when we found out and I had also just found out that it runs in my family. He has been doing good for the most with all the changes that we have been dealing with right now.
But now I have started to notice that my 3 year old son is also starting to show the signs of having ADHD. I took them today to the doctor for a check up and get their flu shots and to talk about him showing signs of having ADHD. I know that part of how he is acting is because he is a 3 year old but there is also signs that are not of a 3 year old. He has some health problems that we are taking care of right now and have been for over a year now. He has a speech problem and has to have speech therapy and physical therapy since he is a toe walker and he also has to wear glasses since he is almost blind in his left eye and had to have eye surgery the summer of 2013. I am just waiting for the doctor to call me with the appts with the neurologist so that we can have some tests done to see if he has ADHD, and they are going to try to get him in with the same doctor that my 9 year old son sees for his ADHD and headaches. So we are having to play the waiting game right now and we hope that we get some answers soon. Don't know how they will be able to get him to take meds since he is only 3, turns 4 in April.
Also part of my family doesn't think giving my oldest son meds is a good idea but they are not around him all the time and they didn't get the reports from school when he was in public school, he is homeschooled now. But I don't like the idea of having to tell them that my 3 year old is on meds for the same thing. But with it running in the family as far back as my grandpa, there is a good chance that my 3 year old son has it too. I mean my grandpa, my dad. my mom, me and my two younger sisters, my 9 year old son and now possible my 3 year old son too. After we find out if he has ADHD, we will have to wait about 3 years to see if your bay girl will have it too (she is sue in April).
I don't know what to do about what could be going on with my son and don't know how we are going to handle a 3 year old with ADHD. Any advice would be helpful.

What has helped me is to read some posts from adults with ADHD, some that were treated with medication as kids, some not and how they felt, positive/negative with the options. The one's that as adults NOW choose to be on medication and say looking back their school years would have been a lot easier if it would have been used sooner. Would I prefer my kids on nothing - yes - but do we as parents, the school and others see a benefit -yes. My son, now 11, can tell me a lot more and talk about how he feels which helps too. Eventually it will be their choice but for now as there parents we just keep trying to keep the balance. Good luck - we didn't start any treatment until age 8 & 9 for our kids - may have benefited earlier but we were going though other behavior modification ideas trying to handle the things that were going on that way, eventually went to get a diagnosis when nothing we tried seemed to help.

I understand where you are coming from. I didn't want to put my 9 year old on meds either but after i saw what the teacher was saying and how he was acting in school and how he was acting in school, i knew that there was something that was wrong. Then after I had talked to my mom i found out that it runs in the family and called his doctor for an appt. But with my 3 year old i am more worried about what is going to be said or what they are going to find when they do tests since he dont talk much bc he has a speech problem.

I work with kids, some with multiple things going on like your 3 year old, and it is hard to see what is causing the behavior. I always think with the kids I work with that are not talking a lot and can't express themselves maybe they are just so frustrated and we keep trying to find a way to let them make a few choices etc...I'm sure your SLP is working on stuff and at home but 3 years old for any kid is a hard age:) They want to do everything and their bodies are not coordinated enough to do it - especially when they watch older siblings doing things and want to join. Hopefully you get a few answers - it's all such a puzzle we have to keep adjusting without the quick fix/answer we want -

Thank you. It is a puzzle. I feel like I could do more to help him but I don't know what more that I can do to help them. I listen to what he is saying and try to understand what he is trying to say but there are times that I don't know what he is thinking. I know that he wants to play with his older brother but they are on two different levels on playing together. My 3 year old has been acting out a lot with hitting and not acting the same. We think that he may have been acting out with me being pregnant with our 3rd baby. But we have been trying to get him involved with things with the baby so that he don't feel so left out. We have tried several different things but we are lost at what more we that we can do other then see another doctor and see what they think things are or what they think may be going on with him.
