I attended a Wright's Law Bootcamp over the weekend so I can get all of my ducks in a row before school starts, now I know my son's rights and how to get additional help if needed. He is starting alternative school next week for 8th grade. Needless to say he is not very happy about it, but he did earn his way in there. We have had several conversations over the summer about school and I had a very serious talk with him Saturday night after my class and I explained to him that he needed to really buckle down and try to do his best as often as possible. I also went over scenarios we've had in the past and talked to him about how he can handle them better even if it means being able to go to a private room and call me to yell and swear about whatever is happening so he can get it off of his chest and move on without cussing out a teacher and getting suspended. Just talking to them to prepare them, go over past issues, they can see things more clearly looking back. Not sure if this will help as you know ADHD kids have a really hard time connecting consequences to behaviors until it's too late. I am dreading school to start! I will have to clean up my email file for my son. I have over 250 from his school just last year alone. Ugh!

wow! It's helpful to know I am not alone. My son is going into 7th grade and really dislikes school. He is really bright but has a learning disability and anxiety disorder as well. This means, that when he has homework (everyday) I have homework. I have to sit down with him and read the questions and often do the writing for him. We got him a small laptop last year which he uses in the classroom and that has helped a fair bit, but he is not able to get started on anything without having someone get him going. I too feel that you need to discuss the issue with your child to prepare them. My son needs lots of preparation to do anything. Unexpected things cause him a great deal of stress and reluctance to take part. Good luck.

My son is 6 and has ADHD/ODD and generally has always liked school from preschool on to kindergarten. Kindergarten was a struggle. My suggestions are to start getting them back into a school routine as soon as possible regarding morning and bed times and work with their teacher right away to make sure that they are off to a good start. I have been trying to find out what teacher my son is going to have for the first grade so I can ease his transition and fill the teacher in on his special needs.
