That's how I feel. I am watching a train going down the tracks heading for disaster but the train is so big and I am powereless to stop it. My son came back from rehab 3 weeks ago. This is the point after the first stint in rehab that he relapsed. Yesterday in counseling he said he hates being sober and so far has on;y done it to not disappoint his family. He tried to convince his father and me that we should let him "just smoke pot" because it is the only thing that makes him happy. That his depression is too much and none of the meds really work and couonseling only helps a little and nothing has ever made him feel as good as the drugs and we can't possibly understand. I told him he will never have my blessing to use drugs and that he should not take the easy way out to feel good by getting high. But he will. He won't go to any meetings "becasue they're dumb" (how would he know...never been to one), won't get a sponsor becasue he doesn't see the point in telling a stranger anything. He is in total reapse mode. We talked about consequences. He doesn't care about the "little" things like hisphone being taken away or being grounded. When I asked what happens if he got arrestes (he has charges from beofre that were held and not pursued because we got hom into rehab so fast, but if he gets in legal trouble again it comes back). His answer was that he would end up in juvie and then probably become one of the 92% that gets caught in the system and never gets out for long and that's where he sees his life headed anyhow. No future and just being messed up so he might as well be happy (i.e. high) in the meantime. He just turned 15. He has all these people trying to help him, We are trying to use all of the resources and he just won't do the work to help himself in this. This is a previous honor student with family who love him, no abuse in the past or present, and money for college. I say this not because I don't realize drugs can and do effect everyone and anyone, but because he has the potential for a future, unlike many of the kids he met in rehab who were headed back to lousy situations. It sucks. I am having to think about what limits I will impose. He lives with his dad and I see him occasionally during the week and he stays with me every other weekend. I can't control his choices. Do I force him back into rehab when he isn't wanting to accept it? I told him he can't be in my house when he is high. He asked "if I smoke every day then does that mean I a m never allowed at your house even if I don't get high there?". I told him I had to think about it. His brother (17) who is fed up with all of this said if he smells pot while he is visiting his dad he will call the cops. I don't want to go out of my way to get him busted, but certainly if he gets arrested I won't try to get him out of it and I told himn he will have to face those consequences. God this kid is so bright and so charming and has so many friends and peole who care. Depression is a major root of all of this and there is family history on both sides and he just sees a bleak future of no happiness. I am rambling but needed to pour this out. I don't know what to do other than remind him I can't control his choices but I can't allow his behavior in my home and I won't support that, although I will always love him,
Take care of yourself.

Your story sounds very similar to mine and I was a mess. I have two sons who are currently using and one of them has had deep depression twice that landed him in the hospital. I had a strong feeling that he would eventually discard his anti-depression medication and self-medicate but I never thought it would develop into an addiction too.
That said - I have hope. There are many, many success stories of young people who've had a horrible time in with their addictions but have come out of it to share them. That's what I cling to - the inspirational stories. It helps.......
God Bless You!
Last week I was out of town and my ex essentially let himself into my house (oldest non addict son was there) and was going to let the 15 year old and 2 friends stay there overnight. Unsupervised. And my son and ex had the nerve to be mad at ME becasue I found out and said HELL NO and made them leave.
His drug tests are still coming up clean, so he is holding on to sobreity for now- but his destructive behaviors are increasing. And he has a court date tomorrow for felony posession (from back in January). He is on a bad path and right now views me as a pain in the ass because I have rules and boundaries. I have made peace with that and basically too bad- won't let him treat me like crap or break my rules in my house. He has free reign at his dad's and they are living a sad life, but I can't make his choices for him :(
So I don't get it....SO many of these kids feel the need to self medicate, I hear alot of them say they feel so much better when they smoke pot....WHAT is so bad in their lives that they feel the need to be detached from themselves? I don't understand.
I have a stressful job, a kid that is battling addictions.....my life isn't easy, but I don't drink, or do drugs, I quit smoking cigarettes after 38 years of a pack and a half a day...but I DO vape from my e-cigarette and LOVE that...LOL..oh yeah and I have a Diet Coke habit of 4 litres a day....toss in my chocolate love....oh yeah and my java....
but seriously...WHAT is SO bad in their lives? Why do they feel the need to escape? AAAHHHHHH!
