My friend's son had one put in. And then a second one. They have to be kept clean and he gets a buildup from it, which can bother him if it's not kept up. Yeah, I've heard good and bad. The important thing to note is that if your daughter is only taking amoxicillan, she'll become used to it and so it will no longer be effective for treating her infections. What will happen then? So for your situation, I think the tubes are worth a try. Each person is different and what might not work for one, might be a saving grace for another. Good luck.

As scary as it sounds I'd almost wish my dd would get tubes in her ears. I've heard good and bad but mostly good. Yes, it's something you'll have to take care of by keeping her ears clean and dry but after a period of time, once she grows out of them, the tubes just come out and hopefully the drainage problem that she has will go away.
My dd hasn't had as many ear infections as yours has (she currently has her fourth double ear infection - she had three double ear infections in three months last winter) but it's all about how their ears drain during cold and flu season (at least that's my understanding from the ped). I just feel so badly when they are sick like that because they are just miserable!
With her history I think it would be worth a try. You don't want her to have long term equalibrium problems.

My SIL's 3 children have had tubes put in. Yes, you have to make sure they stay somewhat dry but my 2 nieces and 1 nephew have def been better off with the tubes then without. They each had to get a second set because when they did eventually fall out the problem wasnt completely fixed...but now they are much better.

My MIL is my biggest problem. She thinks she knows more then the ped. The ped I go to at her insistence! She tells me that they are painful and horrible and that they will do more damage in the long run. My mum said I had them when I was little and I don't even remember. But my MIL swears that my mother must just be telling me that to ease my mind because they are excruciating and I would remember. She tells me this so often that I am starting to believe her and I'm worried about hurting Marlow! She hasn't had an ear infection in almost two months now....but if she get's another the ped wants me to go see a specialist.

They did not hurt my 2 nieces and nephew AT ALL! It was done in one day...no overnight stay and they were all fine after a nap and a bottle. My good friend just had them put in her sons ears as well and she said he was only fussy for a few hours after and then he was back to his normal self. If she gets another infection I would def at least see the specialist and talk to him about it...he is the one with the years of medical school and training behind him...lol Find out what the repercussions are if you dont get them...weigh the pros and cons. I know you have had some issues with your MIL in the past but whatever YOU choose will be the right decision because you made it...not her.

Do what you feel is best! My sister had tubes put in her ears and was in NO pain at all. That just sounds ridiculous.
I'm sorry but you just need to put her in her place. You know what's best for Marlow (in combo with the dr) and you should do what you think is best with the info you're given by the ped. You should switch peds just to show her that you are in control of your own dd.
My MIL gets put in her place frequently by my husband. I know the feeling.

As a mother, you have an instinct-a gut feeling, if you will. Always trust your own gut over an opinionated and pushy MIL.

Oh my goodness, I LOVE THEM! I got them for my son, he has an ear infection every 4 weeks from 6 months till 14 months till I got those tubes in. I was living a fist time mommy nightmare. I would stay up till 5 am rocking my son to sleep with a 105 fever, it was awful. I wish i had put them in earlier, but I was too scared. I wanted to wait till he was at least a year old. I would highly recomend them. He is now ok so far. and he is 2 1/2.

but I agree, only do what you are comfortable doing, and never let a pushy MIL make choices for you. If you do have that gut feeling go with it, i agree with that

Oh, Jolene, do NOT listen to your MIL! :) My son had tubes put in his ears at 9 months old...he's now 2 1/2. Those tubes helped him tremendously. He was constantly sick and miserable from the age of 6 months until he had the tubes put in. He got only a few ear infections once the tubes were put in...and when he did get sick, it was so much easier to treat...they give you ear drops to keep the tubes clear and it clears up the infection faster. The surgery is literally less than five minutes, and he was completely back to normal playing and eating later the same day. We never really had to worry about keeping his ears dry...they just tell you to avoid dirty water (i.e. lake water or soapy dirty bath water) getting into the ears (like if your child is submerged).
There is a risk they may have to put in a 2nd set (my son is having a second set put in in two weeks), but having been through it, we're actually looking forward to the surgery so our son feels better! I don't want to try to persuade you one way or the other, defnitely go with your gut...but it sounds like your MIL really doesn't know all the facts. I didn't have a great experience. I had two sets of tubes -- the first set when I was three. Those fell out and I was still getting ear infections so they put another set in when I was 4-5. Only one of that set fell out when it was supposed to, the other stayed in way too long, leaving a hole in my eardrum. I had to have an additional surgery when I was 12 to have my eardrum repaired. However, my mom says my ear infections were horrible, she can remember green goop coming out of my ears on a regular basis, and she feels that the tubes were worth the hassle. I don't personally remember having the tubes at all. I do remember having my eardrum repaired and while that wasn't fun, I haven't had any lasting damage from it. If it was my daughter I would get the tubes. As others have said, she will just get more used to the medications and it will be harder to treat the infections, and also chronic ear infections can cause hearing loss.

I would recommend talking to the specialist about getting tubes put in the ears. cronic fluid affects speech in little ones and if damaged enough some hearing loss.

I live in ontario. My ped has told me that once a child has 5 ear infections in a consecutive 12 month period or cronic fluid for 2 + months it is recommended the child gets referred to an ENT.

I had to get tubes put in my ears when I was younger due to the fluid not draining right. Mine got so bad to the point that my temples where sticking out the side of my head and when my mom brought me to emerge they were going to call childrens services on her because they thought she beat me. so from my experience having tubes put in are a good thing.

I wish my son can get them put in now, but i have to wait until next month when his ped checks his ears again. hes had a double ear infection for for almost 2 months straight. his ears actually got worse after the first round of antibiotics.

We booked an appointment with the specialist, but it's a three month wait. We are hopelessly understaffed in the medical department here, our doctors keep jumping ship to the states! :)

Here I was told it was 10 ear infections in total for a year before she would get to see the specialist. She has had nine, all dual ear infections. She has never had just one ear get infected. I just told my doctor I wanted the appointment.

She is ahead of the learning curve in speech. She knows, and uses on a daily basis, about 8 words already. My doctor want's to get her speech tested at 18 months, not to see about problems, but to see how far ahead she is or if she will level out and just be average at that time.

It's her balance I'm worried about. I was chasing her down that hall last night and she was laughing. But every two steps she would fall. Not unusual, if she hadn't been walking for almost three months already. Plus she sometimes gets all wobbly and crashes while just standing still!

But I have the appointment, let's hope they don't reschedule again and again, which specialists are notorious for here!
