My 3 year old, still has a secruity blanket that she sucks on. I tried to take it away at 2 years or alittle after 2 and it was horrible with the new baby on top of not having her nap and me GOING CRAZY I just let her have it, so any advise I give you I need to follow as well.
I think just doing it cold turkey would be the way to go because if you slowly try to ease her its just like you keep ripping the bandage off each time you try to take it away at those different times.
It will be very hard to break but after a couple nights it will be easier, a friend told me it was a week of hell, but after that it was fine and never asked about again.
I am more thinking that she only has it when napping or bedtime and not in the day at all, if she does to grammy for a sleep over she doesn't get it there, so she is fine without it, but I know when I stop it she might not take naps anymore, so I am justifing with do I want...no naps or no secruity blanket!!!!!
SELFISH I KNOW, but I figured she will stop naps sometime soon and mayeb break her then, I wash and bleach it like crazy and its getting old FAST!!!
Now my 14 month old sucks on the tags of stuff animals!!! that one is hard because they are everywhere, he likes his tigger toy but will take anything if its around, but HE SLEEPS SO WELL!!!!!!
Maybe offer a soft animal if you don't think she will suck on the tags, at least she has something to comfort her at night and doesn't feel alone. maybe a blankie too.
best of luck let me know what you find that helps.....I will continue to follow this post as I need help too. someday!!!
I did do my part though when she was being weaned off. I popped the pacifiers she did have (it keeps a child from sucking) and handed her teething rusks, teething wands, chewies, etc when I was taking the paci from her mouth. It did not take her long to go from needing to suckle on the paci to chewing. I see it as a positive transition, as stimulating the gums makes them stronger and helps teeth come through.
For nap times, do you have something that your daughter can sleep with? A comfort blanket, glow seahorse, or glow worm normally make a good bedtime companion. My daughter started a habit of seeking her seahorse's fins and tugging on them as her source of comfort. She'll turn it over and over in her hands when she's in a deep sleep.
The first two days were hell on earth because she would constantly cry for it but I just pushed on through and distracted her with other things.
After the first week it gets better. How ever at night she asks for it and I tell her that the "Growly Guss" took it. She seems to except it well if I tell her a character from a tv show she watches has taken it instead of no you can't have it or I don't know where it is.
But now she has been sleeping with out it and I don't have to deal with finding it any more when she looses it.
Just stick with it. The first few nights are awful but if you don't give in they will get over it quicker. Once you give in you will have to start all over again. Hang in there you are doing good!!
When you decided to take it away perhaps take it away when they are not paying attention to it that way you can say the Pacy fairy took it or something heheh! It has worked for me and a few other mothers I know! Good luck!!
"We cut just a little of the tip off of her and she slept with that for a week, then we cut a little more off the next week, then to about half way, and she was like, "this is broken; I don't want it anymore." It worked like a charm. 2 weeks and the pacifier was gone with no screaming and little complaint. If you try this, just make sure there are no sharp edges and nothing is loose. Good luck!"
We're going to try this tonight because while one of our boys were fine without the binky the other was inconsolable.
As I said, my dd only had her soother during sleeping times. Recentley she spent the day with my MIL. My MIL doesn't see her often because she is constantly ragging on me about my parenting.
I packed the soother for naptime and told my MIL loud and clear it was ONLY for naptime.
I go to pick up Marlow and she has her sucky!! So I asked why, when I had told her it was only for nap time, had she given it to her?
Her response:
"You already took away the bottle, and you feed her that disgusting milk and you let her feed herself because you are too lazy too. Why should she suffer by you taking away her soother? If she enjoys it, let it be. Let me guess? You want to have potty trained by 2 right?"
I was so angry! My MIL raises 2 of her grandkids. The 8 year old still wears pull ups to bed. The 5 year old still has all of his food cut into portions smaller then what my daughter eats! Marlow is getting to the stage where she get's mad if I try and feed her, she want's to do it by herself.
So I told my MIL that Marlow was my daughter and it was my choice if she didn't get her soother all the time.
My MIL then proceeded to tell me that she knows, just knows, that taking away the sucky before a baby gives it up on their own causes mental issues and causes the infant to hate the parent who took it away.
I think she may just have a heart attack if she knew I was trying to have it zoned out by the end of August!
I guess it will be another two months until she sees Marlow again!
YOU are Marlow's mom, NOT her. If she cannot respect your rules and parenting, then she has the choice to be in her life or not. This is a discussion for your H and HIS mom, though. Your MIL needs to know that your H supports and agrees with the decisions regarding Marlow. And you don't need to feel guilty about this. Many woman battle over parenting with their MIL's. Stay firm and ask your H to support you in this.
You do what you want and if she can't help you with it when she sees her then she has to wait to see her till she is done, You can't let her have it one day then give it to her the next, that is not fair to her at all!!!!
AND NO SHE WILL NOT HAVE MENTAL ISSUES from you breaking her of this!!! they forget after a couple days!!!! GEESS!!!!
THAT makes me mad and she is not my mom!!!!
My son never kept any bad habit and neither did I, and I was raised and raised my son the same.
