It took my daughter awhile to get the handle of sippy cups. I started offering them at 6 months. DD definitely was not ready then, but I still offered them once a week. I'd let her hold them and play with them.
She had an A-HA moment and suddenly took to it. I'd have to say that this is something a child will do when ready to. It takes awhile to figure out what a sippy does and to figure out what kind of sippy your child prefers! :o)
