Can You Be Allergic to Mosquitos?

I don't know if it's because the mosquitos this year are the same size as sparrows, or if it's even possible it's an allergy, but Marlow is swelling up where she got bit.

She came home from the sitters today with a bite on the side of her knee and one on her shoulder, and they both swelled so that in its entirety they were the size of dimes! And she got bit about a week ago at her hair line and it also swelled crazy big.

Is there a possibility of allergy? Last year she only got bit twice the whole summer, and those swelled up too. And is there some way to reduce the swelling?

My son, who is 18mos, is having similar reactions. Our ped said it isn't uncommon until they get used to being bit. Doesn't necessarily mean its an allergy. They've just never been bit before. Holden has one on his knee that is a huge welt. It's not a lot of fun.....

Totally possible.... I'm allergic I'd say.... sometimes my bites get to be the size of half dollars or larger. I count myself lucky if they get me on a nuckel though cause since there is little blood there the bug bite doesn't grow so much and luckily doesn't itch as much.

I dont know..but Lucas gets welts too...some the size of a half dollar!! They always go down by the next day...not completely though. You could ask your ped...but Im thinking its probably more like what Klima said...they are just not used to being bit yet.

My best friend growing up was allergic and hers would swell to silver dollar size! Having said that, Natalie's swell up too but I think it's too early to know for sure if they are allergic. Hers dont seem to bother her. Try afterbite or calamine lotion.

im alergic to masqitos i get huge lumps in the scin from them like golf balls its good for me being in the desert i guess becuz we have verry few. :)

find a natural masquito repelant and use it everytime your little one goes outside being raised where you have more of them may create an imunity hopfully.

I have a large reaction to mosquito bites too. When I am bit they swell very large and stay big for several days. My doctor said that it is a local reaction (confined to the area of the bite) not something to worry about. This type of reaction does not mean a more serious allergic reaction like anaphylaxis (the allergic reaction where the airway swells and closes off) is something to worry about.

My son is having the same problem. My ped told me I can just use hydrocortisone cream on it to decrease the swelling. My ped said that it is very common in toddlers and most grow out of it. He also said not to worry.

I'm using after bite and witch hazel. She doesn't itch them at all, they just swell. She got three on her face at the sitters the other day, and they are all the size of nickels! Her poor face looks like a mess. But she doesn't even seem to notice they are there. We use alot of bugspray! And we spray her every hour or two. Last summer she got only one bite all year long we were so tight on mosquito watch lol.
