I would repost this in the breastfeeding group - they have great ideas! Young babies don't need much - their tummies are small and don't hold much. I would say don't worry about the pumping. Babies are MUCH better at getting the milk than a pump is! If baby is gaining weight and having the appropriate number of wet/messy diapers, he is probably doing fine. If you need to pump for work, it is good to start now so you can build a good supply, though. I would feed baby and then pump right AFTER he eats. At first you may not get much, but as time goes on, this should improve. Congrats and good luck!

do you feel your milk letting down?? If your milk is not letting down when you pump, that could be why. And if you are not making so much, you can pump dry for about 10 mins, it helps stimulate milk production. Also, when your child breastfeeds on one side, you need to empty the other side if they dont because you will dry up, I learned that one the hard way!!

I would also consider what pump you are using. The electric pump medalla pump in style works great, and helps with milk letting down. It cost about 200 to 300 $, but worth EVERY penny. I was able to breastfeed my son till he was 22 months, and my pump is probably the reason why

I totally second Cab411 on the pump - the Medela Pump in Style is fantastic! It's a must if you're returning to work, and probably nice to have even if you're not!

I rented a pump from the hospital. It was the same one I used while I was in the hospital. The parts that connect to the machine and to the breast are in a sterile package. They don't get re-used. I remember I was worried about that when I decided to rent.
