if she is so advancedthen yes, i personally think it is a stage. she is testing out new sounds and voices. she is creative i take it and her creativity is now starting to emerge.

Its driving me nuts! lol I'm used to being able to ask her anything or tell her anything and her answer or remember it. I feel like I'm talking to a six month old and it's been going on for a month or so now! It's just gotten to be all the time in the last few days.

don't answer her until she speaks in mommy language (or whatever you would want to call it). have you tried that? maybe it would work. tell her you are doing this if u do

Yes, that's what we ususally do and it ends in a giant meltdown because we don't acknowledge her. So we have started to ask her to repeat it in a big girl voice....and we ask her again, and agian and again until she does

Well maybe give her silly voice time every day, would that work? I see silly voice making like acting or being creative somehow. As a mom and an art teacher, I try to give every child's way of being expressive an outlet if I can. It boosts my students' confidence. Hopefully she will get all her silliness out then.

I read on babycenter.com that being a toddler means sometimes being silly and that it is healthy to let them (within reason).

My child changes words around but i still understand her but she, sadly, is not as creative...just bossy (:

We encourge her creativity. I LOVED to paint as a child, and she has an easel....a bloody costly one too (long story that involved 'Santa' forgetting his present in the city hours away he travelled to his parents from and a late frantic Xmas eve search), she colours, paints, does playdoh, crafts, we read, finger puppets, we do silly dancing and we did all sorts of crafty things!

I wouldn't mind if it was occasionally, but its all the time. If she wanted to act silly voices when we were reading, or doing puppets, or horsing around. But when we are invited for supper somewhere and she refuses to speak like a big girl....it gets annoying.

Along with the 'forgetting' of all the things we have worked so hard to learn! She found a preschooler book at Walmart, like tracing letters and learning basic preschool things and she BEGGED for it, for three weeks, because she had been learning to write letters. I splurged and bought the dang thing, and know she won't even look at it or take it seriously. She goes into baby mode when I bring it out so I leave it away.

Definitely a phase, but like all other inappropriate behavior, does require some consequence. There is a time for silly voices, as you indicated, and then there is time to behave like a well mannered child, as in, when you are invited somewhere as a dinner guest. I would suggest starting to work on this at home, since what I am about to recommend causes, as you said, a meltdown. I will freely admit now - I can not stand baby-talk. Pweerty Pwweeease...is like fingernails on a chalkboard. My 3yo (youngest of 3) just started to try this. Well - touche little man, I already have this one in my bag of tricks! I said, "hmm, I'm sorry I can't understand that - please use your words". Over and over, until he had a fit. Then I suggested that if he wanted to cry he was welcome to do so - in his room, he could come out when he was done. It lasted a couple days, he still tries it, but will immediately correct it. My oldest (now 11, same situation, advanced talker, and I didn't do this as quickly, but the same method worked with her).

As for the 'forgetting' the stuff you've worked hard to teach them... they ARE sponges, they forget NOTHING...like that time you said your mother in laws purple sweater made her look like Barney...it is locked in there. Sometimes little ones, when they learn a lot of new things at once, need to just stop and process them all. A few days, a few weeks. Keep bringing it out and trying...if she isn't willing, say okay, we'll try again tomorrow...and eventually - when she is done 'absorbing' will miraculously recover her memory - I promise - just like that verbatim statement about grandma's fashion sense ;)

It could totally be just a phase but if it's all the time I would call her pediatrician and just see what they have to say. My son does silly voices but it's definitely not all the time. Perhaps she doesn't understand that this sounds silly, perhaps to her it sounds recognizable? That's what I'd want to check.

Can you talk back to her using the exact same silly voice? When she realizes that she can't understand what YOU are saying to her, she may just get frustrated enough to give it up after a while...worth a try, I guess
