My daughter's 7 years old and only sucks her thumb when she's sleepy. I've heard it can give then a lot of anxiety if you force them to stop so I haven't. We talk about it though. She's gonna need braces. My EX is more strict with her about it than I am. I say she'll stop when she's ready, and she's gonna need braces either way. Not sure if I'm doing the right thing, but for me it feels right.

My niece started sucking her thumb again and she is 10. You can't cut their thumb off and the more attention you bring to it the more they will do it in secret. eventually she will stop on her own.

My 3 year old is also a thumb sucker. I even have ultra sound pics of her doing it. Our Ped told us not to give her a hard time about it that peer pressure when she starts school would be enough. From the amount of older kids I hear/see still sucking there thumbs Im not very hopeful on the whole peer pressure thing. If you find something that works let me know ok?? Thanks

my sister sucked her finger until she was 15 and my aunt until the night before she got married. We often joke about it now that we are older, but one thing I know for sure is that they are both awesome women and very possative rolls in the community. We get to choose our battles and I say if sucking your thumb or finger is the worst they do then we are doing pretty dang good. My daughter sucks her finger and she is fixing to be six.

My daughter is five and sucks her thumb I do not make too much of an issue out of it. She doesnt do it in school and only when she is tired. Yes we will probably have to do braces. I do not poush her becasue I sucked mine for a loooooong time. My hhisband on the other hand is a little harder on her. Cant rely on the peer pressure thihng because she deosnt do it in front of her friends. I think Ill just let it ride. It a comfprt fopr them like a security blanket.. My son on the other hand has no issues with fingers or thumbs or binkies. I do not know what I did different with him.

My son sucks on his two fingers when he is tired or upset. It drives me nuts sometimes. When he was born he was a premie and had to stay nicu. Me and my husband are very against pacifiers(becuase our nephew had one tell he was quite old and we didnt want our son to be dependant on one and they are the number one cause of infant choking) But being a premie the nurses give them the soothers to suck on to stimulate breathing. Anyways becuase we were against it and didnt no why he was given the soother, when we got him home after a few months we were able to take it away, but he started sucking on his fingers. He gets really agitated when we ask him to stop (hes 5 now) so we just let him be. Allthough we ask him to not make the noise that goes along with it and he is happy with that. Someitmes i think we should have let him ahve the soother and taken it away later but if hes still sucking on his fingers would he still need a soother? Im sure he will grow out of it eventually. And his teeth are straighter then our 4 year old who never had a soother or sucked his fingers. My brother in law used to sleep with his finger under his eye lid. My mother in law siad it creeped her out. The doctor said as long as his nails were kept short and were clean it wasnt a problem. Im glad my son only sucks his fingers lol :)

I don't think you can make a kid stop. I sucked my middle and ring finger until I was 8 or 10. From what our dentist told us if the baby teeth are straight, the adult teeth would be too.
