How old for bathing alone

What do you think is the appropriate age for children to be left to bathe themselves alone? I have a daughter who is six and an 8 year old son.

Although I am not a parent, I have an 8 year old brother. Shower time it's the most difficult thing ever! I tell him to take a shower and an hour later he's still hanging around. My mom has to help him because he won't do it on his own, but that just because of the way he was brought up.
I've been telling her it's time he starts showering on his own, but she says he's still too little. But I think (if you check up on them) kids can start showering on their on when they turn 6 or 7.
