it was often claimed by psychiatrists and psychologists that panic attacks were thrown up by the subconscious mind as a defense or as an attention seeking device
so lengthy psychotherapy was supposedly essential.
over 20 years of trying to help panic disorder sufferers I still have never met anyone who was helped by this approach and consider it to be a waste of time and money
some insist on the partner also undergoing psychotherapy to see why he or she is torturing the sufferer and so causing the panic attacks
some require that each panic attack be analysed to find its subconscious cause
"but what were you thinking of at the time" is the approach.
this doesnt help either, panic attacks just happen and usually for no particular cause
the above type of therapy is based more on a religious belief of various psychological theories and its a waste of time to persist with it, CBT and meds is the way to get better, IMO

thanks for the info Harry. I had heard of the idea about it being a defense mechanism, although i do not believe that to be true. the medication that i feel has helped me the most is beta blockers and every once in a while a half a Xanax. i beat myself up over needing to take meds, but if it helps, i want it.

I found cognitive behaviourial therapy helped me - and I could trace a lot of it back to being in the second world war and being bombed, in a shelter. It was only when I realised this was why - and I had been so young at the time, a baby, that I had not been really able to remember. However, I think peoples nervous system vary in their response time to stress as many people DONT get panic attacks who go through the same problems...C X

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
