A panic attack is a period of intense fear or discomfort, typically with an abrupt onset and usually lasting no more than thirty minutes. Symptoms include trembling, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyperventilation, and sensations of choking or smothering. Panic attacks can be very sudden, appear to be unprovoked, and are often...
Hope this helps!
Do you have an ally at work? Someone who knows about your attacks and could take a break with you after an attack? Or could you get yourself to to your car or a private area outside to call a loved one when it happens at work or at least after? Do you know how long your attacks typically last so you can watch the clock and have that to guide you?
I had an attack today also. I find that the whole situation is less stressful (like that's possible =/ but relatively you know) if I just acknowledge that it's happening and try to focus on the few simple things I can do, rather than trying desperately to stop it and then being more upset because once I just can't stop a panic attack. Taking zoloft for a few months actually has made a small difference for personally though in how I manage them.
Even if I can't stop it I can remind myself that it will pass after X amount of time by keeping an eye on the clock. I sip cold water. I practice mindful breathing. I get a bag ready early in the attack for if I can't slow my hyperventilating on my own once it progresses.
When I start tearing up and getting emotional (I don't know about you but I Always end up crying a little), I try to not beat myself up about that fact. I just remind myself something like "I'm very upset. It's understandable. I feel so overwhelmed. but I'm okay. this will pass." It helps me feel more normal about the whole thing.
My thoughts are with you and I wish you the best.
