No, you are not the only one with this. It has to do with your autonomic system. There is some research to indicate that in people with things like panic or IBS, there is a brain malfunction in the autonomic system. This is the "master control" center in the body, it regulates many of the functions like BM's and heart rate. The system is sending wrong signals, or exaggerated signals, or even no signals--people get constipation too--it all has to do with the relay system in your brain. Some people also get a BIG urge to pee when they get a panic attack even if they just went to the bathroom.
Medications like SSRI's and benzos can help, as they change some of the functions in the autonomic nervous system. Another thing to do is to get on a regular diet where you eat at the same time every day, so your bowel movements will occur near the same time every day. Metamucil and/or flax seeds can help with the alternating diarrhea/constipation. Drink plenty of water when you use metamucil so it can do its job.
Yes, you can develop IBS at any age, and there could be other issues going on as well like diverticulitis or even lactose intolerance. It would be a good idea to see a gastro-enterologist who can figure out some other treatments for you. At your age bowel cancer is very unlikely, but if you go to the gastro doc they can schedule you for a colonoscopy to check you out. That may give you some peace of mind.
do you get the palps at home?
I am taking metamucil every day to balance out my stopped up issues and my going to much issues that alternate.
