well I am glad he is doing somewhat better, but I would still stay away from dairy foods (I am lactose intolerant but can handle some dairy)....what I usually do is baby foods and jello.....one thing I loved in the hospital is they made this great chicken soup wasn't creamed but they pureed it and it was yummy....oh and smashed potatoes (no milk or but maybe a lil butter and smash the potato).

They think he now has c-difficile, hope you have time to give me some advice about that Diane, I am sure you are familiar with this as an RN. Thanks for the tips on the diet.

Oh and I am doing okay, just finding it hard to work with all of this going on! One step forward, then one step back. And, I have panic attacks when I am not with him - perhaps because he experience problems when I am away.

He may have gotten it from being on antibiotics or just being in the hospital. C-Diff is a harmful bacteria that has run rampant in the gut. He may have abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea. And the smell......let me say I would have to hold my breath at times so I don't vomit when I would enter a patient's room who had it. They will give him Flagyl or Vanco and fluids...you can become dehydrated easily with it.
Hang in there hon I am hoping he is in good hands so you don't need to worry so much. Hopefully the meds will kick in and get the C-Diff taken care of. Hugs!

Oatmeal, cream of wheat and orzo cooked in chicken broth are what always taste good to me coming off of liquids! Oh, and saltines.

Fantastic news, the more precise c-difficile test came back negative and they are planning to spring him tomorrow! We need to get him back on food carefully, but he is almost 90% off the pain meds. Glad to get him out of there before he catches any hospital nasties!

Thats great news!!! Def get him out of there before he catches something! I know after being hospitalized both times for a month each for my ap attacks and my levels stayed high for about 2 months after that. I could not touch any milk products for at least 3 months afterwards or I would feel an attack coming right back on! So he may need to stay away from dairy for a little while. I was hospitalized last June for 30 days, and then many more times but not as long the last in Feb for 3 days, and have just recently been able to start drinking a tiny bit of low fat milk again. I would stick to clear broths, crackers, bread, plain noodles, cucumbers. Thats basically what I lived on for a few months and boost also. Keep us posted on how he is doing! And how you are doing! Stay strong! :) We are here for you!

Thanks everyone, he is tolerating potatoes, rice, applesauce, even a wee bit of grilled chicken. He has some minor pain when eating and the doc said his pancreas would still be inflamed for awhile. He has lost 50 lbs because he was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks then on TPN for one. How will we know when he is ready to begin eating solid food again? And we will def avoid dairy, but do you think he could tolerate veggies or fruit? He is craving oranges!

glad to hear he is doing better....I get cravings as well...if he tries a small piece and not the whole orange and sees how he does with that then you can increase it. That's how I test myself. Everything will be trial and error and sometimes that same thing that was ok will be bad next time...no rhyme or reason.

Slowly! It is trial and error. I know myself, that I have advanced my diet too quickly in the past and ended up in pain. Personally, raw fruit and veggies would never be on my list of things to try right after an attack. But that's just me. I usually stick with pasta, chicken, bland. That's what I crave after an attack. And for some reason, I crave salt! Glad he's home and doing better.

Steady progress continues, he is still on the BRAT diet but beginning to be able to eat cooked soup with mushy vegetables, fruit smoothies, chicken, butternut squash, canned fruit, strawberries and bananas. Now he wants, get this, Sashimi! I don't know, what do ya think? Is he nuts?

My recommendation...from past experience... would be to skip the sashimi. I love sushi, I crave it, I used to eat it, sometimes I was ok, the last time was a different story... I don't think it's worth the risk. Especially since he was tested for C-diff,... and if he's taking antibiotics. I'd just recommend letting his system recover a bit more first. Glad to hear he's getting his appetite back.
