So we had a good day. Martin's pain is decreasing significantly, he managed to eat clear liquids, and the TPN is giving him energy. The only thing is that he was urinating a LOT today and now I am having a massive anxiety attack worrying that he is now diabetic.

You see, I have an anxiety disorder that is normally well managed but with all that is going on with him I am finding myself playing out all of the worst case scenarios and starting to lose it.

And then to get practical, I am wondering how they diagnose this? Or could this be part of his healing process?

Falling apart and trying to understand it all.

It's not uncommon to have diabetic symptoms while on TPN. I know while on it, I needed to check my glucose every 4 hours. And the first couple day I actually needed insulin, but then everything tapered off. Are they checking his glucose levels? If not request that they do..

I am glad your husband is doing a little better esp pain wise. And yes being on TPN they put glucose and insulin in the bag as well as all the other things your body needs. But sometimes the numbers aren't exactly right in the bag regarding the insulin because they don't want you to crash....so then you might need to give extra insulin with the TPN ...when I was an ICU nurse that happened a lot until they got it right. So this should only be temporary.
As far as you the spouse is concern...we sometimes forget those that love us what they are going through...I am so sorry and maybe talking to your dr and getting something to help you temporarily or talking to family friends and even us!!! We are here for you...vent away! Also please keep us updated too:) We all care:)

I am so grateful for the support you all provide. He is much more normal today (although it is hard to describe him as normal any time ;-)
They said he may get out on Sunday or Monday. Thank you for all of the good thoughts. Sometimes I just need someone to talk me out my tree!
