Chronic pancreatitis can present as episodes of acute inflammation in a previously injured pancreas, or as chronic damage with persistent pain or malabsorption. Patients with chronic pancreatitis can present with persistent abdominal pain or steatorrhea, as well as severe nausea. Some patients with chronic pancreatitis often look very sick, while others don't appear to be...
You're not the only one! I am the heaviest I've even been and eat (by far) the least. Hardly seems fair to gain weight on popsicles and jello! But I need exercise to lose weight and that's hard to come by when the CP hits. I'm trying really hard to eat protein with every meal and that seems to help my system metabolize the food better/faster.
BTW: I hate the word fat - so demeaning. Please don't call yourself that! You're simply built to last :).
I am wondering if those of you who have over weight issues along with CP happen to have type O blood?
The reason I ask is sopposedly those of us with type O blood tend to get what we now call insulin resistance and over weight issues easily. They say back in the old days type O people were the survivers that lived through the frequent famines because their bodies easily stored fat for them to live off of.
Now a days we no longer need to live off of stored fat to survive but the body doesnt realize that so it keeps on storing fat for us. Gee thanks a lot body! lol
I do feel made to last though. It is amazing how much of a beating our bodies can take (surgeries, sickness and so on) and still pull through so well.
Hope things are getting better for you. It's a sad and funny thing when being able to fart is an accomplishment! I so understand. I often joke I'm full of crap (well, the other word really!).
Humor is one of our saving traits I think. Keep it up! Nibbor
Significant exocrine insufficiency does not occur until 90% of the secretory capacity of the pancreas is lost. This can be the result either of progressive parenchymal destruction or obstruction of the major ducts which prevents the pancreatic digestive enzymes from reaching the duodenum. In either case, it is a late development. The major consequences are steatorrhea and creatorrhea, excessive loss of fat and protein in the stools. Carbohydrate digestion is not impaired because amylase is also produced by the salivary glands. The patients may complain of bulky, offensive, fatty or oily stools."
Insulin resistance can result from a variety of factors. In some cases, the problem is hereditary. In other instances, factors such as lifestyle choices and extreme stress can contribute to insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance inhibits the bodys natural process of conversion of glucose to energy in the body. Insulin resistance disrupts this process by reducing the number of insulin receptor sites in the cells of the body. Insulin resistance also increases the level of insulin in the blood stream, which contributes to obesity and can lead to damage in the body that can result in a heart attack or stroke.
Insulin resistance can be diagnosed by detecting elevated levels of fasting insulin. This measures insulin in the blood after you have fasted and can be done in the doctors office. These results, combined with other symptoms of excessive weight, such as abdominal fat, high blood sugar levels, blood pressure and other tests, lead to a diagnosis of insulin resistance and a plan to improve the condition.
In addition to dealing with the excess of insulin in the system, there are lifestyle factors that can be addressed. The biggest lifestyle factors are consuming an unhealthy diet and lack of physical exercise. Lack of activity contributes to insulin resistance, as well as all the underlying health conditions that can result from excess insulin.
Before the CP caused me to become a type 1 diabetic (by killing off my beta cells in the pancreas) I was a type 2 diabetic with excelleant control due to diet and weigt lifting. I was nice and skinny and lean. I had been over weight before that but after the DX of type 2 I learned about carbs and lost the weight fast.
I got pregnant and the CP made my pancreas give up. All with in my 1st trimester I was barfing all the time and very very sick and turned into a type 1. My blood sugars went sky high and stayed that way. They later tested my c-peptide and GAD antibodies which showed that I was now a type 1 diabetic. The pregnancy aggrivated the CP which made the CP go on a beta cell and enzmye making cell killing spree.
Thankfully the baby was born healthy :)
Now I am what they sometimes call a double diabetic, meaning I am a type 1 and 2. But the doctors just call me an insulin resistant type 1 diabetic.
My genes and lack of knowledge on the dangers of high carbs made me be a type 2 but I was dealing it. I was dealing with it very well. The CP made me be a very brittle type 1 diabetic with horrid out of control sugar swings. Im on an insulin pump receiving high doses of insulin 24/7 now. The pump is for my type 1. The metformin pills are for my type 2.
So here I am carrying around massive amounts of woman even with CP :(
