I'm in trouble with my 8-year-old - to the point where I think I'll just throw him out the window... Having searched the Internet for clues as to what's 'wrong with him' (because honestly, there HAS to be something more to this than just 'normal kids' behaviour' - none of his brothers are like this), I've found this disorder ODD which seems to fit just perfectly... apart from a few things... And this is where I really need help...

Anyway, my questions are:

Could it be ODD even if

- the child behaves ok in school/outside the boundaries of the family

- the child in between fits of destructive, mean and defiant behaviour actually has 'nice' moments, where he says that he realizes that he's misbehaved, and where he actually seems to be genuinely sorry (though I'm not entirely sure he's not just very clever at saying things that he knows will put him back in grace again)

- a fit SOMETIMES (in perhaps 2 % of all cases) can be stopped before all hell breaks loose, by talking calmly and decisively to the child

- the child SOMETIMES expresses (seemingly genuine) concern about others

It feels so weird trying to find a 'psych lable' for your kid... but I think all of you in here agree that it's easier to take these things when you've actually got a name to it...

Wow! This sounds a lot like my daughter. She is 9 and has had problems since she was 4ish. It is just getting worse and worse as she gets older! Finally, after taking her to doctors and therapists that just wanted to through her into a kids jail, I found somewhere that is trying to help her get back on the right track. So far it has not worked though but they told me to give it time. They put her on another medicine so hopefully it will work after time. I am about at my wits end though. I am a single mom and it is very difficult EVERY DAY!

But that's great though, that, at least, something's happening, right? And I guess we can't just expect miracles over night... So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!!! And I really feel with you, being a single mum and all... phew...!!!

wow are you sure you not me lol. my im raising my grandaughter shes 8 and the teachers in school love her say she heipful and polite and works hard. and i ask my self if they have the rite kid cause once shes home everything sets her off hec she will set you off. i truely dont know how much more i can take i searched up odd support groups praying there was one i havent figured out what to do but at least i have places to look now. i wish you the best

Hello, I am new to this group as well. Rest assured, you are not alone. Our 10 year old son has Aspergers, OCD, ADHD and maybe ODD and the crazy part is that his defiant behavior can be controlled at home but not at any school. I say any school because he has attended a regular public school, a Quaker school and a special school for Aspies. It's maddening that he can "hold it together" in some situations vs. others. We are searching for a therapeutic school - it's seems to be a never ending journey. You are definitely not alone!
