Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.

Yes, like the kind where you are always doing something OCD and you can barely leave the house for long periods of time.

Hi, Katie, yes our 27yr.old son has severe ocd, I wrote a discussion on it today under "so hard to go on" and also on page, I think it's page 4, on the discussion, titled, "please help us" If you get a chance please read those, maybe our son and you can help each other, and I am always here too, if you need to talk. Take care, I will be praying for you.

The symptoms that trouble me most are usually not the stereotypical rituals or intrusive thoughts that are typically associated with OCD, but instead, many of my worst symptoms might better be labeled as OCPD (Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder), but I am usually diagnosed with OCD, because I do struggle with rituals and obsessive thoughts, and because many psychiatrists are most interested in treating people with medications, they are often reluctant to diagnose OCPD, because medications haven't been shown to help as much with it, not that the standard psycho-pharmaceuticals have been shown to be that effective with normal OCD either. But anyway, I've been struggling with OCPD/OCD and clinical depression for something like seven years now, and on the whole, it has only gotten worse with time. Even though I've always gotten mostly all A grades in school, and despite the fact that I love to learn, I was lucky to even graduate high school because mental problems forced me to drop classes, not attend school for a year, and I was only able to take a few independent-study courses for my "senior" year, in which I didn't physically attend school at all. Since graduating high school, I've been unable to start college or work a job. Because of my incessant perfectionism and my sometimes deep feelings of depression, I have a hard time enjoying many things that I do, even many things that I choose to do for "fun," like watching movies. Since being diagnosed with OCD, I've unsuccessfully tried virtually every medication standardly prescribed for OCD or depression, and I'm currently scaling up my dosage of Clomipramine (Anafranil), which I guess is a slightly older medication that I haven't fully tried yet. I've also been seeing a therapist/psychiatrist for approximately 45 minutes, once a week, for over a year now, but so far I haven't seen much improvement from that therapy. Finally, partially because I don't currently attend college or work a job, I basically don't have any good friends in the off-line world, and I'm not even sure if I have any good friends on-line. But not everything is bad in my life! Although my anxiety and perfectionistic obsessiveness is often troublesome, it is not always so bad as to cause misery, at least in my no-school, no-work life-situation. While my depression is sometimes very bad and sometimes suicidal, it is not always that bad, so I usually feel OK enough to function with some contentment. My parents are very supportive and loving, as are most of my extended family members. All I'm trying to say is this: a lot is really bad in my current life-situation, but there are also many good things that I can sometimes smile about enough to keep me willing to live. However, when I think about my current life-situation and how I've been living for the past seven years, I often feel depressed. I'm still living with and totally financially dependent on my parents; I am unable to start college, nor am I able to work a job; I essentially don't have any good off-line (maybe even online?) friends. But most distressingly for me, I don't feel truly happy (or even content) very often at all, and I will not continue living in this non-independent, often-painful state of existence--this struggle of life--for much longer. Thanks so much if you read all of this post; I'm sorry that I talked for so long. If you ever want to talk about anything, definitely feel free to contact me anyway you feel like. I wish you much happiness and joy!

Every moment I'm awake, I'm in my thoughts. But I function for the most part. Don't know what to call that.

Um i dont know what it considered 'severe OCD' although mine is there as long as im awake. Or if im drunk it calms down a bit but i still do it because i want to back myself up for when im sober and im ffreaking out because i didnt abide by my rituals. Other than that its full blown!! What would you consider 'severe ocd' Im just interested in what others experience.

I am not really sure what severe OCD is, but I think mine might be severe. Here is something I found online. It measures your OCD in like less than 3 minutes. Here it is: http://www.brainphysics.com/ybocs.php
