Hey guys :) I hope everyone is well I was just wondering my mom says that psychiatrists are really expensive and I am trying to convince her to take me to ateast two sessions so i can get properly diagnosed what do you guys think? Another question is there another solution besides therapy? I downloaded a really good book on ocd and it has a lot of treatments you can do alone. Let me know what you lovely people think!

They are very expensive especially if your mom doesn't have insurance. I've read that you can look into a psychiatric nurse practitioner and I think but am not positive that they can prescribe meds or you can try talking to your normal doctor some will prescribe meds if they understand your needs. Though many general practitioners might not have the same knowledge or understanding of the different neurological conditions. My son's doctor or neuroligist would not prescribe for his OCD but helped gear us towards programs that we could get assistance with since he has state insurance and I have none. My doctor on the other hand did prescribe mediation for me but I had too many concerns with the medicine she prescribed me so I am now looking into a psychiatrist for myself that won't cost $300 for one appointment.

The expense is the main reason I haven't gone to a therapist yet - major bummer! I've read some really good books on OCD from the library, so I definitely think that's a good place to start. Also, some psychiatrist have a graduated pay scale based on income. Another idea could be to find a university where graduate students offer therapy at a lower rate. Word of warning though...my husband did this once and it was not that helpful to him. They treated him like a child and wanted him to draw pictures of his family, when he was like 20 years old! So there's a matter of cost, and there's also a mater of finding a therapist that helps you. Some churches also offer counseling for free. When I had a very stressful time a few years back it helped me immensely to talk to my churches counselor. Still, my sense is that many of these general counselors don't diagnosis specific positions. So when I seek out a therapist in the future I'm going to try to find someone who specializes in OCD. Good luck to you!
