Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.

I'm new to this site so don't know if anyone has posted this before:
Has any other female member noticed that their OCD is worse when they have pms? I can't help but wonder if that indicates that hormones may play a role, for girls and women at least. I also notice that my OCD can sometimes seem worse in the winter months. I also struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Perhaps the symptons of SAD just make one more prone, vulnerable, to a spike in OCD. Any thoughts?

Yup. I have been having problems having cycles for the past year. I'll have them lightly and then none at all. Today was my lucky day and I see now that yes my OCD and anxiety is WAY worse.

OCD is definitely worse when PMSing for me. I always thought I was the only one but I know now that others with OCD have this issue as well. In fact, I'm dealing with it at the moment and I'm freaking out. I really don't know what to do. I'm seeing a therapist and I'm on meds but nothing seems to be helping... :\

estroven helps my ocd, espeacially the week before ladys day.

ocd in women is worse right before periods because of lack of hormones....... serotonin is a hormone that we lack thats why we have ocd. estroven is a hormone replacement . it also helps to make more serotonin.and its cheap over the counter, it's all about hormoines ............... they keep us functional , thats why more women suffer from ocd than men.

God yes! Mine is also way worse in the winter months as well. But that is because the sunshine makes you produce more serotonin which is what most OCD sufferers are lacking

YES. I definitely believe that PMS can take a toll on you, OCD or no. I've been struggling with this for months.

Well, I know very close person who has chronic OCD and depression and I have seen that it exacerbates a week before, during and a week after (total 3 weeks!). I see her a bit ok in the left over single week! Also, she has an early cycle (few days early every time!) As far as treating it, 5 HTP seems to elevate depression/mood {relief} (tried with 100mg daily once and planning to replace that with 50 mg thrice a day {divided dose}). However this has no effect on ocd hence also planning to add tyrosine. So technically, trying with serotonin and dopamine

Yes. I'm so sorry this is rough for you. I have OCD, and PMD (Pre-menstrual disorder) which sometimes makes me feel like a horror before I start my period, and has dropped me into considering suicide multiple times. My best advice is this: 1. Track that sucker. Your life will be easier if you can find when you're likely to start your period. If you know it's hormones and OCD, it is easier to prevent or escape an episode. 2. Make a habit to disbelieve the false logic that spikes during these episodes. If you can't control your emotions or thoughts, try your best not to take them seriously. 3. Get solid truths you believe, and keep them close at hand during the roughest moments. If you're like me, you need something to ground you in those moments, to create sanity when your mind is not. 4. If at all possible, find a good friend, explain to them the situation, and do not let yourself isolate during this time. Please, please, please try to get a friend or two to help. My friends have talked me out of the crazy tree more times than I can remember during PMD/OCD episodes. Don't worry girl, this all gets simpler, and at least a little easier with a lot of practice and intentional positivity.
