Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.
As for someone saying, "I spoke to my doctor about when i have children and he said Paxil is the most dangerous to be on during pregnancy and he recommends Prozac" The issue here is Prozac is one of the WORST drugs for lactation. (And the ""study" which showed Paxil caused "growth" problems was FUNDED by the company which makkes.....PROZAC. Go figure, and it was only ONE study.) Prozac is also one of the only SSRIs which get into human milk (the rest, such as Paxil and Zoloft are NOT found in any quantity in human milk or infant blood or serum in the Mother's who are using these drugs.) Prozac can cause serious tremors, screaming episodes, and other side effects in the baby, not only during lactation, but as it wears off after pregnancy if the mother chooses NOT to give her baby her milk. (And what a shame that is.)
OCD can be treated during pregnancy and lactation, but the doctor NEEDS to know that lactation is a NORMAL AND EXPECTED sequalea of pregnancy and prescribe accordingly. (Who wants to go through "Prozac withdrawal" or take a chance on it, during the Post Partun period? I wouldn't.) I have nursed 2 of my 4 kids on SSRIs, (for years a piece, I don't nurse babies a short time, I nurse until my kids tell me they are done.) and have had no problems, and Dr Hale's "Medications in Mother's Milk" as well as the American Academy of Pediatricians, and the Briggs book agrees that not only can women who need SSRIs take them during pregnancy, but also during lactation. Prozac being the LEAST preferred drug for lactation, however.
You may want to talk to your doctor about the NEED of an infant for his mother's milk, and how you CAN use your med (just not Prozac) and still treat your OCD.
One also has to do one's own research while pregnant. I suggest talking to a Board Certified Lactation Consultant, she can answer questions about meds in lactation.
