Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.

How many of you view your OCD as something that you will have for the rest of your life? Although maybe not to the degree that you have it now, but something that will be a struggle to deal with for your entire life. If so, do you find that it is a good thing to accept that it is chronic and therefore start learning how to go on with your life with the OCD always being there?

I expect to deal with it to some degree my entire life, but I don't feel doomed. I'm battling my depression and addiction issues and when I have control of those, most of the ocd stuff won't seem so bad. I think knowledge is power. I guess how important it would be would corresponde to the type/severity of ocd.

First thing came to mine "Heck yeah it is chronic" I had been dealing with this since I was 5 lol. Maybe even when I was born lol. Honestly, I think it is a good thing to learn to accept this like any other mental or physical health problem will have its ups and downs. Just like anything in life, OCD is a rollercoaster and you gotta ride it out with all its curves, bumps, bruises, good times, and not so good times. I think accepting it as chronic helps one to adapt. But overdwelling can cause stress too, so finding a balance is key. Easier said that done though when you have the mind of OCD ;)

I think I'll always deal with it. But as I have aged, some of it has become so old hat that it just can't get to me any more. Still, it surprises me how many stupid old things can rear their ugly heads again given the proper stimulus. Like stress. Anyway, I do think it can get much better, especially if you develop healthy ways to deal with stress, like exercise and a good diet so your body isn't stressed over what it's having to detoxify, etc.

i think it will always be there. I have accepted that....it will go up and down, it might be relatively mild at times but it will swing right back into action again. I can never see it going competely. Thats ok.

It started acting up in 7th grade. I prob will always worry about something. I think diff times in life may trigger it to really show up and affect my life.

Yeah, given that I've dealt with mine on varying levels since I was about seven, I don't see it disappearing anytime. I think it's best to just meet it where it is right now, and not expect it to disappear. Work with what you've got, make whatever changes that you can. I think that as we deal with it, we hopefully get a little better at coping with it, and even though OCD can morph into a lot of different anxieties throughout life, the more experience we have controlling those anxieties the better. I think we'll probably always deal with it, but hope that our ability to manage it improves over time. And hey, if it isn't chronic, and it DOES disappear, all the better, right?
