Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.
Years alter, I decided to say f$#@ it" and just tell a few females I had OCD. Both dates and old female friends. It was a disaster. Two females had no further contact with me after being very attentive before I told them and the few others were polite but their whole tone changed toward me.
Only one female was accepting of me but she misunderstood what OCD was. And she was a nice but she was more of a rural "hick chick" whose standards would be much lower than a white collar, urban/suburban, professional female who wants certain things from men. Especially a serious BF or husband.
I believe to let someone get to know you first and tell them when you feel comfortable. Let them get to know the healthy and fun side of you before you clobber them with the news of a major psyche disorder.
Also, would anyone go into a job interview and say "by the way, I want you to know I have a major psyche disorder called OCD"? That would be asking for a rejection.
Your OCD is no ones biz but your own and it is your right to tell who you want, when you want.
I have never bought into that crap about if people do not accept you for who you are, then who needs them? That is not reality because one will experience a ton of rejection. At least that is how things in the world I grew up in and still live in work.
Only your closest and longest of friends might accept it.
You mentioned during your dating years, does this mean you are no longer dating or are you in a long term relationship. I will hope for the second because a true partner will help be supportive, although they may not understand. You have mentioned you have had other medical issues and this with OCD may make it very difficult to find someone. You are 100% correct when you say it should be your decision when you tell the person and that it may scare off someone if you tell them to soon. I hope that that does not stop you from putting yourself out there if you do in fact not have a significant other. In my opinion love is a very powerful motivator and healer.
