Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.
My aunt is having a really tough time with her son who is autistic and recently developed OCD.
A couple weeks ago he had his first, and hopefully only, seizure which took our family for a loop.
She has been trying several different methods to help him with his OCD, although with autism, he cannot communicate verbally, so it makes it that much more difficult.
She tried Celexa and it seemed to make him worse, so she had been trying natural methods and cognitive-type work instead.
Well, I just found out that yesterday she was out in public with him and he found a mark on a water fountain that caught his attention and he was feverishly trying to remove it. When she tried to take him away from it, he got violent...kicked her in the chest, broke her glasses and scratched her face.
I feel helpless because I don't know what to do or what to say to her. She has had a rough past few years as it is with breast cancer, an unhealthy marriage, etc. and I was wondering if anyone can give advice as to what methods have been used to try and treat OCD effectively.

This last time though she said he was feverishly scraping away at this black mark on a water fountain in the doctor's office, which was about to close, so she said she kept a very soft and gentle voice with him, but stern, and told him they needed to go.
Well, when she finally got him away from it he got very violent with her and was hysterically crying...mind you, he NEVER cries, so it broke her heart.
I actually suggested to her to maybe get him one of those PSP's so he can put on the headphones and listen to music, watch a movie or play a game to keep him occupied enough to get him through a store without incident.
It is so great that you have caught this early with your son, so hopefully it doesn't progress:)
