Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Support Group
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder, more specifically, an anxiety disorder. OCD is manifested in a variety of forms, but is most commonly characterized by a subject's obsessive (repetitive, distressing, intrusive) thoughts and related compulsions (tasks or rituals) which attempt to neutralize the obsessions.

My pre-teen daughter was diagnosed with OCD last year. Just recently she has started pulling out her eyelashes and can't seem to stop. I've read this behavior is fairly common with OCD and wondering if anyone can share success stories on stopping this behavior. My daughter came to me crying because she had worked so hard at it, she poked her eye and had created quite a big red spot. It hurt and she was so sad that she couldn't stop it. It's heartbreaking for a mother to not know what to do to help.

I hear it's from crazy amounts of stress. Sadly, not all OCD is curable. The one piece of advice I can give you is to not lecture her about it, or punish her for it, or make her feel ashamed.

Trichotillomania, or hair-pulling is often seen amongst those diagnosed with OCD. The Mayo Clinic has some excellent info re: The nature, causes and treatment for this type of behavior. I am not sure of the exact web page but google will get you there! Know you and your daughter are not alone. Other members on this site have posted about this. Hang in there!

I dont know much about it but I know with my nail biting I think there is a pain sensation that is involved as a de-stressor. I am going to try "rubber band therapy" Lol Every time I find myself wanting to chew my nails I will snap a rubber band on my arm. If it is a pain response thing then it should make me want to stop biting. I'll let you know how it goes maybe it would help her too if it works???? I am sorry by the way that you are both dealing with that I have children myself so I know it must be awful for you :( Its just going to be a matter of figuring it out like a puzzle, dont lose hope just try and get brainy about it who knows you may find the answer.

Thank you all for your advice and support. I will ask her therapist about other strategies - maybe the ribber band thing will work! She did recommend putting a cloth or something tactile in her pocke to touch so that she could distract her hands.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
