I think everyone is different. For myself I find that if I cut back on starchy foods and soda pop I see the pounds I am trying to lose melt away a lot faster and that is even without exercising daily. In all aspects I think it rings true to a certain degree that everything in moderation is the way to go, however I found it somewhat difficult to keep starchy foods in moderation at times. For myself I found that replacing starchy foods with something else a bit more healthy for 2 weeks straight has made quite a bit of difference and keeps my motivation to keep working on losing weight.

I just have to really focus harder on portion control so I bought some of those dinner trays that are similiar to the frozen dinner ones like smart ones, Jenny Craig, Nutri System ect... It helps me in determining how much I really should be having in portion sizes. Anyway just my thoughts and what I am doing hope it helps a bit for ya:):):)
