Hi!
I'm new to this group. I joined because I'm finally getting really serious about losing weight. My husband and I tried for a year to get pregnant and couldn't The most likely cause is my weight (he's been tested is good)
I'm a Type 1 Diabetic and currently weigh 260-265. I'm working with a primary care doctor, an endocrinologist, a nutritionist and a therapist. We've come up with diet and exercise goals on a daily and weekly basis and I log everything on the my fitness pal app.
I feel proud of myself for the progress that I've made so far but I still feel overwhelmed with how much further I need to go.
I'm 5'9", so I should weigh around 140ish. I do have a large frame (curse these Irish hips) as measured by a doctor.
I am currently taking insulin(short and long acting) via shots, Metformin, folic acid(because it does good things for me) and Phentermine. I'm on a low dose of the Phen, 30mg daily. It's working well too. I lost 10lbs since December.
I'm hoping that I can maintain that momentum by sticking to my diet and exercising. I have an elliptical machine in my living room. Which makes it really hard to justify not working out for 10 minutes every night when I get home from work. I try to work out minutes twice a day on my days off.
I'm currently trying to stay under 1,400 calories for the day but that can be hard. Yesterday I ate 1,350calories by the day before that was 1,770
I'm finding that my fitness pal is very helpful since it reminds you to log and gives you either red or green text if the food was good or bad.Something about seeing a red "This food is high in fat" and then seeing all the empty calories I just ate makes me feel guilty. Which is good because then I don't do it again!
I am allowed to "cheat" on Sundays. I get 2,500 calories that day so I can still go to brunch with my family and have a date night in which I don't have to worry and agonize. I also try to work out a bit more on Sunday before I leave for the day.
My therapist suggested joining an online group for support and to keep me honest and motivate so here I am!
I'm hoping to be down roughly a 100lb before I have to stop the phen. I can safely be on it for another 8 months but there's no guarantee that it won't stop working sooner. I could always step up the dose to 37.5mg but I don't want to. I'd prefer not to take any medication at all but I need the help to lose weight.
My doctor has tested my thyroid and anything else you could think of. I'm a healthy adult if you exclude the diabetes. My husband is very supportive of this. He reminds me every night to work out and will ask me if I'm really sure I want to eat that....It's annoying but a good thing.
We've thrown out all the soda(even diet/sugar free) and snacks like chips and such. I'm eating Atkins bars and drinking protein shakes instead. BTW-I love Premier Protein shakes. They taste decent and are only 160 calories for 30grams of protein, 1gr sugar and 5gr carbs(3 of which are dietary)
I work in a retail pharmacy but I've been going out of my way to help around the store if I can.(Slow day and there's someone to cover me) This allows me to get some exercise in during the work day pulling pallets or pushing carts in. It's something at least.
One of the reasons that I was prescribed the phen is that I keep weight I've lost off. It might take me 6 months to lose 10lb but I don't gain it back. Everyone is confident that once I go off the medication, I won't gain the weight back. My plan is to continue to log my meals and exercise so I can keep track of how much I'm eating off the medication and make sure that I don't fall back into bad habits.
My doctor reminds me often that the drug isn't the one losing the weight. I am. The mediation is a tool that I am using to help me. I can't rely on it to lose the weight for me. I still need to do all the work, it's just going to make it a little easier.
I'm going to try to post a weekly progress report and weigh in and I'm hoping that I can continue to lose weight. I am going to get down to at least 160 or lose a minimum of 100lbs. After that, we'll try for a baby again.
