I already dread going to the doctors for many obvious reasons. I'm 400 lbs at 24 years old. My dr. gets so upset anytime I put on more weight and I don't blame her. It's her job to make sure I am aware of how morbidly obese I am, how I shouldn't be so big especially at such a young age, and so forth. I get it! However, I hate going to the drs. for a cold, migraine relief, or something non weight related and the only thing she wants to talk about is my eating, do I exercise, and my weight. She never wants to talk about the reason that I am there and that bothers me.

First off can I just say I get that I am fat? I am reminded every time I have to sit in the tiny chairs with arms that I can barely squeeze into. I am reminded every time the nurse calls me back and sighs when I step on the scale. The scale is ridiculous the platform to stand on is tiny and when I step up my belly rests on the digital portion of the scale. It clearly isn't built for people of my size and larger. I am reminded when the blood pressure cuffs don't always fit. I am reminded in many ways that I am obese.

I value drs and I value the importance of going to see a dr. However, I hate that my weight is the main topic of dicussion and not the reason that I am even there.

Do any of you exprience this, if so how do you handle it?

I am sorry you are going through this. Some doctors are so insensitive. I do not go to the doctor much, so I don't have much experience. Other than tell the nurse or doctor you are working on it and you would appreciate it if they would address your medical problem that you are there for. Try not to take it so personal as their manners are terrible.

@FlRetired thank you, I agree sadly some doctors do not have the best bed side manners. I understand their concern fully. I'm not in denial or anything about my weight/size and health but I just wish some cared more and were more understanding.
Any time I go and see my doctor no matter how sick I am she always makes it important to address my weight issue as if I am unaware haha. When I inform her I am working hard she dismisses it. I try to not take it personal I really do but something just strikes a chord with me about that. Thank you again for the kind words and support!

You need to get a new doctor. I've been overweight my entire life and my doctor doesn't talk about it unless I bring it up and then she asks so what are we going to do about it? I am 28 And she knows I am still young and can lose weight if I put my mind to it .She gives me ideas and support and makes me feel like I shouldn't be ashamed and I love her for that...she keeps me healthy but doesn't solely focus on my weight. If you can't feel comfortable with your doctor your weight loss journey will be so much harder.

Sometimes finding a doctor that will address all your health issues (not constantly hammer on just one issue) is better for your health. However, if you are serious about wanting to lose the weight you should check out a doctor of facility that is specifically for weight loss. This way they will be more of a support and aid to your weight loss journey than a horrible reminder of something you are trying to do. Going to a doctor doesn't need to be dreaded, find a doctor that works for YOU. :)

Stop with excuses. Get weight loss surgery. Get a support group, counseling, whatever.

Your doctor knows the cold won't kill you. But if you don't get the weight off, you are dead already.

Just do it. Don't wait until your life passes you by.

Have you tried finding a different doctor? My one doctor knows I’m aware of my weight and am working on it so he won’t bring it up and my gyno brings it up out of concern but never focuses on it like what you described. It is what it is and you can’t fix it instantly, it takes time to change your habits and get to a healthy weight. It is not beneficial for them to dwell on it. Maybe tell your doctor that you know they are concerned and your trying to work on it but to please not dwell because it’s not helpful. I hope you have a better dr visit than in the past.
