So i went in to an orthopedic dr today because i have developed bad knee pain. I had a few xrays of my knees. I then saw the dr. He examined my legs. Then he started being a DICK about my weight. I had told him i have been walking an hour each day like five times a week. He didn't even acknowledge my 15 pound weight loss. His words were "YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING RADICAL AND QUICKLY". when i asked him whether or not continuing to walk each day would hurt me any further, he just shrugged and said "exercise is only 10% of the battle. The rest is DIET" he kept saying over and over "you are soooo younnng". He even said i should consider bariatric surgery asap. I told him i cannot afford it because my ins only covers half, his response was "you need to find a way to afford it". F'ing DICKFACE!!! he also said "i really hope i am not the first one to tell you these things". I turned into a smartass. I pretended to be surprised and said "omg...you mean i am not anorexic???" I hink that pissed him off. I felt like kicking him in the nuts. I am tired of being treated like shit by drs, coworkers and strangers because i am large. And the even worse part is that i still get the judgment even though I am TRYING!!! I TRULY AM? i know i have a lot of improving to do in the eating part..but i have been walking almost everynight for an HOUR even tho it hurts like hell!!! I just feel so degraded and insulted by this doctor today. He had a valid point about my weight. However...the way he spoke to me was awful. It is making me truly feel hesitant to keep going to the dr AT ALL ANYMORE if i am going to have to deal with this kind of crap. :( :( thank you for listening..

What a jerk!! HE obviously doesn't know you well and if he does, he is even more of a jerk. I have been walking an hour every day too and I know the pain game quite well. I have chronic pain in my back but i keep going forward, sometimes i tell myself 1 step at a time, you can do this, 1 step at a time. There are times when I am just dragging and can't seem to go another step, but i keep going. I want to win this battle with my bulge and i have found that walking really has helped me get the weight off and it helps me mentally.
I hope you find a new doctor . . . one with more bedside manners.

As a person who was at one time "morbidly obese" and is now simply "obese", I can identify with everything you said. Doctors are some of the MOST insensitive people out there! I LOVED IT when you said you wanted to kick him in the nuts! You go, girl! And definitely report his behavior. He needs a wake-up call and maybe a reprimand from his superiors is what he needs.

I have been through this many of times. I had gastric bypass surgery feb 13, 2013 since then I lost 115lbs. I was diagnosed with Pseudotumor Cerebri in 2009 an went blind for a month. I saw a dr that wouldnt take care of me because I was to fat as he said. I was only able to afford the surgery because I have medicad/medicare. I couldnt afford it other wise. I no longer get judged by drs when I tell them I had the surgery. I am still heavy an have lots more to loose. I am so sorry that happened to you.

I stumbled across this group through a google search because I have a rash under a roll (sigh) and saw this post and had to click on it because I have a lot of pent up emotional pain because of doctors who are degrading. Your post resonated with me so much that I felt like I needed to sign up for a DS account and let you know that you are so not alone.

No one has treated me as poorly as doctors in some cases, in my entire life. Obviously, I've felt discrimination in every area, but to be a professional that everyone *needs* and to be so awful to people is awful! I am so sorry you experienced that!! I hope your knee feels better soon, did he prescribe any pain medication to help you manage the pain while you continue to walk? Great job on the 15 pound weight loss! It's hard and you deserve to know that you are doing amazing!
